I can't find my ignition key for my 98 Explorer XLT. I managed to open the door using the keypad. I do not have a spare key to make a copy. Called the local Ford dealer today and they said I am out of luck because Ford does not make spare keys beyond 10 years. So, what do I do? The same parts guy suggested I go to a locksmith but what's he gonna do that Ford can't? Can't be cheap for sure.

Usually 150-200 gets you a key made from scratch from a locksmith

Try a different Ford dealer. Mine has made/programmed keys for nearly all of my Explorers/Mountaineers. All were older than 10 years old at the time.

Options:
1. Find your keys
2. Dealership
3. Locksmith
4. Find a junker with same PCM and keys and swap

I like the first option.

I agree. I have never lost a car key. I know it is somewhere in the house and I have a sneaky suspicion how it was "lost". Somebody moved it to keep things tidy.

I guess you could start googling to learn how to install a PATS bypass and install a pushbutton start. Forscan should help with the software changes.

At a minimum, you will probably need a new lock cylinder with matching key. If you get the correct cylinder/keys, you can reprogram the vehicle to accept the new keys with Forscan. It's a small learning curve, but I understand it's not hard.

Never trust a parts person. They know nothing. Take it to a dealer, they have all the info to cut you a new key or two and you'll be on your way.
