LPG conversion - questions to Canadians

Is it true that there are a lot of cars and trucks in Canada that have been converted to run on Propane? If so I'd like to find out what is the cost of the conversion... factory and aftermarket.

That was a fad about 15 years ago, it went away with the dodo bird .

Its not that expencive to convert but you get low power bad fuel economy.
the fuel economy didn't matter before because propane was so much cheeper than gas was but it's catching up quick.

Thats my opinion, if I was to do anything to my X I would like to drop in a deisel .
If only we had access to the Philippines 2.5L intercooled turbo that they have in their Ford Everest .

I believe that sometime this year Chrysler is going to start selling here in the US popular in Europe Jeep Cherokee TDI - might be something I would like to grab.

Jeep sells trucks and vans overseas installing 2.5 liter turbo diesels in them... I'm just wondering why they don't do it here. Better milage and at lest for now cheaper gas(diesel fuel)... and I also wonder why Ford doesn't do the same.

I just read an article in the 4 Wheel Drive magazine on propane conversion for an off-road use for carburated vehicles... wonder if it would be possible to find a similar kit for fuel injected engine.

Most conversions these days are to Natural gas....Most police and Taxi fleets now run on Nat Gas.....

My neighbour works for the gas company and he has a brand new natural gas truck and he says 75% of the time he has to run it on regular gas (it runs on both) cause it runs like crap on natural gas !!

I'm really gonna explore possibilty of converting to LPG... or buy myself a diesel. I might want to find out what propane costs these days.
I know most of you guys from Europe run on propane... what is the cost of installation overseas?

Over here there are several LPG kits. Which one you want will depend on the engine type. For the SOHC (with plastic inlet manifold) it is recommended that you have a multi point system. Single point systems can cause damage to the inlet manifold during a backfire situation. Installation costs vary but it is not unknown for the conversion to cost £2000. To get this cost back you have to do a lot of miles so its only worth while if that is you're intention.

i dont know how much the conversion would be in the us in terms of USD, but i beleive you can get tax refunds, and other financial incentives in the US if you run an alternative fuel vehicle, so it may be worth the extra initial cost, esp if gas prices continue to rise.

In BC...they actually give you a credit on a new car if you get Nat gas insatlled...you get another $1000 if you leave the nat gas sticker on it.

A large number of people on the German Explorer board (www.exploristen.de) have already converted their Xs to LPG. According to them, there is almost no difference in driving noticable. Mileage goes down a bit when running on gas...I am thinking about converrting my X too...

I have been looking already... nothing so far. Might be able to see if dealer knows anything about it.

Natural gas needs a large tank... propane is better and more efficient. Problem is I'm trying to find a retailer that would install a conversion kit in my truck.... filling up is no problem. More and more stations open every day. Just check this one: Michigan Propane Association

Natural gas or propane tank is a bit harder to brake than regular gasoline tank... I would install one of those in place of a spare... my spare is not there anymore anyway.... hard to fit a 33...

Switch controls what you're riding on.... gasoline or propane. Switch on the fly... no need to stop and turn off the engine.
