1987 Bronco II
Last night while trying to pull my buddy out of an ocean, I snapped something in the rear end and for now I have a front wheel drive BII. My bronc has the open 3.45s in the rear.

There's an '84 B2 for sale locally for $150. (Says motor is weak but drivetrain is all good.) It has limited slip 3.73 rear end.

I browsed a few sites and it looks like its going to be $100+ for an axle shaft or ring gear or whatever else I may have broken. Seems like I'd be better off buying the parts car for $150.

Question is is it wise to drop in the LSD out of the '84 without having it rebuilt? Do they go bad with time and miles? And will my 3.45 ring gear work on that differential so I don't have to touch the front? Will the '84 differential require a different shim?

Thanks for any and all help and replies!

hehe when your post header is "LSD?" and the first line in yer post is "I was pulling my buddy outta an ocean..." I thought for a second you meant like LSD-LSD you know the LSD.. hehe

Sorry I don't now the answer either but here's a bump

I would swap the entire front and rear axles in whole (messing with the gears themselves is something you don't want to do if you don't have experience with it).

Plus, 3.73 is a much better ratio than 3.45.

Checked it out today and turns out I have a broken driveshaft. Easier to replace but holy **** more expensive!

you would have had to completely redo the rear end, changing gear ratios requires you to reset the gear tooth pattern on the ring and pinion. hell for 150 i would buy it just so i could change front and rear to 3.73. not to mention having a parts vehicle laying around is really really useful

WAIT I was just looking and someone on here was parting with a really nice aftermarket one for cheap (I'll try to find the link).. check in classifieds
