Okay so yesterday I locked in the hubs to get out of a friends driveway(we had snow last night and my friends driveway is really steep.) I did not unlock them until I stopped again which was about 4 miles down the road. I noticed that their was a loud squeeling noise coming from the passenger side hub. I unlocked them and the squeeling went away. After work I locked them in again just to see if it was a fluke and it started squeeling immediately when I started to drive. When I got home I took the passenger side tire off and then the manual hub and realized that the outer nut had come loose. The nut was soo loose that it was rubbing on the inside of the manual hub when the hub was locked which I believe was causing the squeeling noise(it didn't do it after I tightned everything up) . I cleaned out the hub of all the metal shavings and put everything back together. I have a few questions now. First. Is the inner nut supposed to spin when your tourqing the outer nut? I have the inner nut with the "nipple" then the locking key and then the outer nut. The inner nut spins about 1/4 turn or maybe more when tourqing the outer nut. I thought the nipple and key held this nut in place. Secondly, I found some pictures of how the hubs should look and how to change from automatic to maunal and I am missing some pieces up front at least on the passenger side. Looking at pictures and the how to I found out everything needs to be in this order--Nut with the "nipple", then the locking ring, then the outer nut, then the axle shaft spacer, then the axle shaft ring and finally the hub goes on. Mine goes like this--nut with "nipple", locking ring, outer nut then the hub. I am missing the axle shaft spacer and axle shaft ring. Are these important peices? I Know it's common for the outer nut to come loose but I think it's coming too loose and that's why it's rubbing on the hub, because I don't have that spacer or ring. Anyone know where I can buy these peices? If I call Ford is this what their called?

Another thing does the front driveshaft spin when the hubs are locked in?

It has been a while ago since I did hubs so I might be wrong but here it goes.

1. Is the inner nut supposed to spin 1/4 turn or more when tourqing the outer nut?
No, the nut should be snugged up for bearing preload and then tighten the outer nut to whatever the torque is (something like 100 + #s)
2. Are the axle shaft spacer and ring important peices?
Yes, they keep the axle in the spindle.
3. Where to buy these peices?
Ford.
4. Are these what Ford calls them?
Get a diagram and point them out to the parts guy.

Another thing does the front driveshaft spin when the hubs are locked in?
Yes, the front axle, driveshaft will turn if the hubs are locked.

I might be totally wrong on this one so get some more opinions.
 






Thanks for the answers. I am going to the dealer on Monday to pick up those parts. Do you think not having the axle shaft spacer and ring would have wrecked anything else? I hope not. I thought something was wrong when the inner nut was turning when tourqing the outer nut. I think that the keyed washer is the problem. It only slides on one way and I think that it's wore down making everything turn. I also discovered last night that the squeeling sound was coming from the front driveshaft and not the hubs. It's coming from the middle of the u-joints on the transfer case side of the driveshaft. I am guessing that middle joint is a CV-joint. Is this right? I am also guessing that I would have to get this from Ford. And is this right? Thanks again.
