junk yard a new shifter lever = cheap

There are a few different styles for the mazda 5 speed transmission so make sure you get the same one!

There is a nylon pivot ball on the end of your shifter, they wear out
Under the boot you will find it, the shifter is held down with 3 bolts if I remember right
I believe there is also an aftermarket short throw shifter available for you = expensive way

I believe Rick did a thread on the hurst 5 speed shifter, try searching around!!

Thanks I was worrying it was something in the tranny. I had it rebuilt by a small shop and this happened after it was out of the warrenty period (12 month 12k)

it could very well be! But my guess is the nylon shifter pivot ball, check there first.

If you get one form the junkyard make sure it is the same, I replaced my 93 tranny with a 95 tranny,(they didn't give me the shifter) the tranny mounted up and worked fine, but the shifter was different, the shifter from my 93 was very sloppy and wouldnt stay in gear. I had to go back to the junk yard and get the shifter from the 95 and it worked. The tounge coming down and the ball were different.

Yup what he said! my 88 shifter did not fit my 93 trans, my 93 shifter didnt even fit my 93 trans, turned out the yard who sold me the 93 trans actually sold me a 91-92 trans and they had a different shifter

So take yours with you or know exactly what you are looking for before you buy it

the plastic/nylon bushings and washers are still avail from ford for rebuilding the shifter.

I got a full set for my 92 for 40 bucks even, including tax (in MI)
