Ya know that little metal screen in your MAS? Im pretty sure I read something about this somewhere... but can you remove it? Whats its purpose? Just seems to make a whole lot of air friction... and from pics of the aftermarker MAS, there never seems to be a metal screen there.

When I first installed the KKM kit, I left the screen in. I figured it would help filter the air more. Last week, after reading a post in the Vette forum that referred to removing the metal screen on the Vette's MAS and they had Dyno'd it to see an increase in HP, I removed it! Here's the link:

Ill have to try it... or I might not.. I have a new MAS on the way... :)

Anyone with an answer here I would appreciate it.

I installed my KNN filtercharger and threw the screen right out and put my ornadoe there ... if this is bad please advice (but I figured the filter filters and the screen ???)

thanks

tornado?

Two possible reasons for the screen: 1) Might be to make the mass air flow sensor operate "better" (i.e. this sensor is a hot wire anemometer type sensor and the rate of wire cooling is related to the air velocity around the wire and maybe that screen somehow supposedly makes the air flow near that sensor improved) 2) Might have something to do with the size or scale of air turbulent eddies (i.e. the size of air turbulence eddies can be no larger than the screen hole size). These are merely wild ass guesses - but I have wondered for some time what the heck that screen is for and I have doubted if it is merely a filter as it is located downstream of the air filter. In that link about corvettes, they removed the screen. Sounds like a good idea to me!

Flyguy:

Yes, Tornado ...

And you can hear it when the pedal goes to the metal ... It spins the air after it passes the MAS and created a wind tunnel effect assisting the air into the intake system...

Thats what I thought... I reccomend taking that do a dyno to see if you should keep that in... most people report losses in HP and mpg after installing it. I had one a while back and took it out... Ive been meaning to get it on the dyno... but keep forgetting... anyways... my mom had one on her vette a while back... and got a significant jump in mpg by removing it...
