Mass Air Sensor

ok cool where would i find it on a 2000 4.0l sohc

MAF and MAS are the same thing, just different people talking about a mass air flow sensor

You will find it attached to the lid of your airbox.

Between the air filter and the main intake tube. It's part of the airbox and has some wires going to it.

ok i know where/what that is. on a post here by david barnes, its located just a few down the list, he says that his dealer tells him its the culprit of the problem we have been discussing. i just have a hard time believeing that. please read that post and let me know what you think. thanks

This site has hundreds of thousands of posts, could you please link?

hahaha yeah I was looking too.

the MAS can cause all sorts of driveability problems, what makes you say it is not the source of the problem?

The MAS is used to measure the volume of air entering the intake, the computer uses this along with the signals from many other sensors to adjust the fuel/air ratio. if the MAS goes bad or gets too dirty it can cause havok on the engine.......

how do you post a link in here?

Right click on the address bar of your internet explorer application, copy and paste just like any word document

yeah I wonder myself.. but

Hey Guys...
Yup.. the dealer FINALLY was able to get the problem (sure felt like tranny, tcase etc) to happen.. the scanner said the MAS was going 'dead'. Supposedly when this happened, it was causing the PCM to go haywire. ( I guess it was shorting out, or something? ) , and hence thats where my jerk would come from. It was like the tranny was shifting down reel fast, then back to where it was supposed to be. Speed things up , and at 60mph on the thruway, it feels like running over something, etc... They left the VDR on my truck till next week, just to make sure, but they feel they got the culprit.. has anyone else has MAS problems like this???? I guess the MAS is the root of a lot of problems, if it acts up... Seems to me because of its importance, it should be a preventive maint item... thats just my thought...

Comments?

David. If the MAS sensor gets dirty you can clean it. Other then that it should last the life of the vehicle.

A dead short in the MAS means wither faulty sensor or wiring harness/clip going to it.
Since the MAS is not cheap the dealer should test yours first before replacing, but they love to sell their $300 parts :)

AS long as they fixed the problem I would be a happy customer. A surging like that, though it feels like a tranny problem is often fuel related, which this was. the MAS is one of a handful of sensors that help the engine's computer determine the air/fuel ratio.

I agree

After understanding what/how the MAS is related to engine/drivetrain performance, it makes sense to me. The frustrating part was getting it to happen when they had it. I have extended warranty, so it costs me nothing, and I will not have the paperwork till I take it back next week to give them the VDR back, (they want to make sure it is fixed)... but I am thinking they replaced it. Like I said, once I understood the role the MAS plays, it makes sense to me. Bottom line.. one should not underestimate the MAS!

Is that aftermarket " performance calibrated "
MAS worht the money ?
