Matt's '92/'99 4X4 V8/4R70W swap!

No 2WD for donor?

EDIT: DO NOT be STUPID like me! Don't get a 2wd trivetrain to go into a 4wd vehicle! The transmission output shaft length is different and will require a full trans teardown to retrofit. Luckily one of the other awesome members of the forum has the parts I need to convert. But you may not be so lucky. I doubt most junkyards would sell you Just the shaft and housing. Would rather you buy the whole transmission.

What vehicle did you get the setup from? I'm looking into a '99 2WD Explorer as my donor and will be going into my 4x4. Should I be looking for a 4WD Explorer?

'99 2wd explorer.

You will definitely need to get an AWD explorer to swap into a 4x4 ex.

Or you will have to do like me and tear down the trans to retrofit some parts Which I doubt you will be able to get easily.

I was very lucky that 410fortune had the parts I needed Layin around.

Unless you get some kind of rediculous deal on the whole explorer it will be more cost effective to get an AWD version. Even if it costs more.

But if you get a crazy deal on a 2wd then you could get it, then sell that trans, buy a 4wd trans, and maybe come out on top.

Dang!! Being on an island, AWD 5.0L V8's are hard to come by. There's a few 2WD V8's around here though.

Ohhhh hawii, hmmm

That does complicate things abit. Would be hard to have a trans freight shipped out there I suppose.

Best bet is to ask around online and locally at trans shoppe for someone who is willing to sell you the tailhousing and tailshaft from an AWD.

If you can't find any AWDs locally.

Oh oh nevermind.

If your using the AA adapter then yeah, you can use a 2wd trans.

Cause the adapter replaces the two parts I was talking about changing. So you just have to teardown the trans, yank the 2wd shaft and tailhousing, stick in the AA tailshaft and housing, and your good to go.

And yes, with the aode/4r70w you must use the shaft adapter kit he was talking about.

Do to some kind of differences in the way the oil travels around the shaft.

Cool Deal! Thanks!

Hows the area between the exhaust manifold and the fender wells? Enough clearance to pull plugs?

from what I've been told it's do-able. Not much more of a pain than the v6.

trans rebuild kit has arrived.

I will start the teardown today.

thanks! Hope your conversion goes well!!! Ordreing my parts tomorrow. Starting a new thread too!

send me a link so I can suscribe. :)

scratch that trans can wait.

I just got handed two acdc tickets!

the metal collar came with the parts I ordered for the tailshaft with the speedo
You need this sucker, it is what keeps the drive gear in place!!!

sorry last couple of weeks have been nuts around here :) I am replacing the engine in a 98 5.0L, I now have a 02 Sport Trac in my possession (long story, its mine, I just didnt drive it) so I had to get that truck up to par and pass emissions, we installed a hot tub so I had to build a new back deck privacy thingy and we are still remodeling our house LOL
Hope AC DC kicked butt, now get to work on that trans you could have it done by now!! LOL

Well from the pictures I woke up to in my email this morning, that concert looked like it kicked ass.

That was the sickest concert I've ever been too.

Crazy awesome.

Since there is too much ice to do anything else I'll start on the trans tonight.

holy crap we got the whole trifecta!

Ice, sleet, and now snow!

sounds like a handul buddy!

In all the parts diagrams and such that collar isn't reffered to with a number so I'm gonna take a look at it tonight and see what kind of clamp I can fit inside the housing.

Yep, we got that too. Freezing rain earlier, sleeting now, and another 4-8" of snow tonight to top it off. We already have about 4-5" of snow from last night too. I love it, up until this point we haven't had more than an inch of snow at once this winter. Gotta love 4x4 :D

Have fun with that transmission, they can seem daunting at first, but once you get it all apart and see it sitting there you'll be like, "That's it?" lol.

At least that was my reaction. Oh and if you're anything like me expect it to take twice as long with dis assembly because you stop every part to examine it's function and exactly how it works with the rest. I spent a lot of time in awe of every part when I took apart my transmission. And kept bothering my dad to show him stuff since he's never taken apart an automatic before. lol. :p:
