max speed

what is the speed governer(sp?) set at in a 91 explorer? i have gone about 170, according to the stock speedo, and im wondering if that is the max i can go because of the governer(sp?) or if it just doesnt have the power to go faster. o btw, thats 170 kph, 170 mph would just be stupid!

Your 170 kph would be equal to about 106, which I have heard of some govenors set at 105, but not on what years or anything.

I don't feel safe in a stock SUV over about 80-85, so I have never tested either of mine.

I had a 91 S-10 Blazer that i was clocked doing 235kph in...that was great . I hit the gov in the x at 175kph, when i hit it it feels like the brakes come on for a split sec.

give me about 30 miles and i can get to 115 in my x never hit my governer, is it possible it doesnt have one?? also ive read that my rpm redline is like 4600 rpm but mine will bury it past 5K now that i lifted my x i am not going to be cruisin at a hundred anymore damn thing turns left or right when it feels like it

how is this so? my spedom only goes up to 85? u guys have after market? i mean the needle goes well past 85 but i dont know exactly how fast im going.. how did you know u were going 106? btw i got a 94 xlt

In my old car I had it up to 178kph then the gov kicked in, I belive it just cuts off the spark, until the speedo hits a cetain speed.

Going that fast was crazy and I was in a lowered car, in Alberta, on a flat, straight, road. The car felt as if was getting "light", I think I was getting a build-up of positive air pressure under the car. Not a good thing. It felt like my car was going to flip over.

I wouldn't feel safe going that fast in my Explorer. She's not built for speed, only looks!

My '95 goes 115mph before the govenor kicks in but at that speed you're just asking for trouble in an SUV. I hit a small bump in the road and the front and rear suspension topped and bottomed out 3 times before settling down, it never left the ground but I was puckered up trying to slow it down without killing myself, all the reason for me to not push mine much past 85-90.

My old '86 6000 had a govenor in it too, but somehow I don't think even a supercharged 3.8 V6 transplanted in place of the 2.8 or even a Caddy 4.9 or Northstar V-8 (with OD that combo could theroeticlly go 165mph) could ever pull that car to 255mph. Best I ever got out of it was 122 mph (digital dashes are great)

I have got a new PCM in my X since a recall about 1.5 years ago...since then I have gone about 110 mph in mine...when accelerating I hit 6K RPM everytime I'm at full throttle. I don't know if the new program is just that different from the stock ones that they had in '97? But I did just order an Apten...so we'll see how she flies when that gets put into her...waiting for more fun to begin.

ummm do you mean 192 kph? cause 192 mph seems a little too fast considering a porsche 911 turbo tops out around there...

ya its a little scary floatin down the road at that speed, i havent gone that fast since last fall....then i almost got an 800$ ticket and 6 points off!

I guess it was just bad humor thats all. My Apten chip got rid of my govenor so in theory I can go as fast as I want. The only way that I'll get my rig going 192 is off a cliff

Exactly! I have a '94 XLT and the speedo goes up to 85, without my chip I've had it to around 95 (estimation), pretty far past 85 at least. Not sure how accurate the speedos are anyways. I didn't feel safe at all, the slightest turn and I thought it was gonna go out of control.

straight roads thank god, plus ur right, the speedo and tach are prolly junk as far as high speed accuracy is concerned.
