Just got the bill...ouch.

Turns out my synchros/spacers were out, luckily all the gears were in good shape. While he was at it, I had him replace the clutch, rear main seal, and the slave cylinder. Not sure how much else was done, but this guy is a fanatic and very picky, so I know the money is worth it.

Final price: $1702.00

I was going to pick up the X tomorrow, but just got a call from the mechanic. He says its slipping out of first gear, has to put it back in the shop on Monday...great...just great. What could this be and how much more?

My mechanic beleives it may be the 'shifter', I guess he is referring to the shift lever. Does anyone have any experience with these? What is the price on one of these?

Basically, he says the car is jumping out of first.

I took the shifter off mine once to replace some bushings and freeze plugs. I dont see how the shifter could be the problem. Could be the first gear synchro, i am not sure if 1st has one or not or if it could even be the problem. I dont know too much about the inside of the mazda manuals. Maybe someone will chime in and give you some insight.

if it is "slipping out of gear" i wonder if he readjusted the shift linkages correctly... if it wont shift and lock itself into that position maybe a cable is too short not allowing it to lock itself into a gear..... kinda like the jeeps popping into reverse when idling in park....

dam that's expensive!
i hope that doesnt happen to mine.
is it cheaper to rebuild the auto tranny?

Leenjen, I hate to say it but automatic transmissions are much more complex then manual transmissions. So the bills are much higher.

That's about what I paid to have my 5speed in the '92 rebuilt, except I also had a new input shaft put in. The only thing re-used in my tranny was the case, shifter, and gears. Everything else was new.

Thanks guys.

JDraper,
Thats what he did to mine, same case, gears and shifter just replaced everything else.

Brian1/jimabena74,
Those are good questions, and hopefully thats what happened. I'll ask him on Monday about the shift linkage and 1st gear synchro. All the Synchros are new, he did replace one piece that was worn with a new one, but I am not sure what that piece was.

Could this be characteristic of a Centerforce II clutch, perhaps not allowing it to completely go into gear?

He says there is a synchro on 1st gear but the synchro only assists in getting in gear and the shifter is what holds it in gear. He is dissassembling the shifter tomorrow to see whats up.

This has never happened before, do these routinely wear out? He says it was fine but when he ran some errands the other day, using my car for another test drive, it popped out under hard acceleration (leaving an exit ramp). Any thoughts?

I know the guy and am sure he would not have caused the problem.
