What MPG should I expect from my '94 4.0L auto? I'm getting 16 commuting (mostly above 50 MPH). Does this sound right?

16 seems to be what many folks get, However, you can definately do better.

I have a 4.9 SOHC and get about 23 at 70 MPH and about 21 in town.

There are ways to improve it....

I get about 12-13 city

I used to get 16-17, now I get 19-20

The things I have done to boost my average mileage are as follows:

Mobil 1 oil in motor
Mobil 1 Auto Trans fluid in tranny ( complete change )]
Mobil 1 rear end lube in rear end
KKM Tru Rev Intake
Custom made cat back exhaust system
Removal of roof rack
Many, many coats of Zaino Z2
Increased tire air pressure

My 95 XLT gets about the same MPG

Aldive, how do you have a 4.9L SOHC in a 99 XLT?

For some reason, all of Aldive's posts lately say 4.9 instead of 4.0. I don't know if it's his computer or a very confused pinky.

im thinking pinky...lol

My gas milage started out at about 15-16 combined when I first bought the vehicle in 99. it has 72,000 miles at the time. SInce then I have installed a larger throttle body, Bosch Plus 4 spark plugs and Bosch premium wires, replaced the stock exhaust witha Borla Cat-back, changed all the fluids (except power steering and brake fluid) over to synthetic Amsoil, i upgraded to 16" rims and larger tires (i was suprised this INCREASED the gas milage...I would have thought bigger tires would have lowered the milage....) my best tank I got 21 MPG. I do much highway driving to and from school, but i also do city driving and off roading. During the sand dune driving the milage usually goes down a few MPG, but thats understandable. I don;'t know if it makes a huge difference, but i also replaced the O2 sensors, the IAC sensor, the TP sensor, cleaned the MAS, had a fuel injector flush at ford, and have been running 93 octane gas. My truck is addicted to 93 octane. a few months ago it was idling rough (due to the IAC sensor) so I ran several tanks of 93 octane Amoco. Well, at first the gas milage went down, but by the third or fourth tank the milage went up. Now it is higher then what it was running the cheapest gas I could find (generic 87 octane). Up here in Michigan the price for 93 is still lower then the price fo rthe off-brand 87 at my home so I figure why not make the truck happy and give it the best :-)

I am assuming you corrected the speedometer/odommotor readings when going to larger wheels?

Yeah, I did fix the speedo gear. I think since i have the 3.73 axle and that isn't as efficient for highway use that after upgrading to the P265/70R16 my axle is essentially like a 3.55 now and I get better all around milage. If you have like a 3.07 and upgrade tire sizes i am sure it would make your gas milage go way down.

i have a stock '94 auto with 3.73 gears and i get 12city and 20-22 highway

14mpg around town, 15-16 for all hwy... 94 4dr 4x4 with 3.27 gears, 31" tires, and Warn manual hubs (gave me .5-1mpg better on avg. )

92 explorer xlt gets 21 on highway
and 16-17 in city.

i have k&N and a flowmaster

I get 13 city .. 20-23 highway
