Fuel is burning rich and grey smoke comes out of the exhaust when idle, the check engine light stays on when in park and when giving it throttle it flashes fast. The ODB II scanner says misfire on cylindars 1 and 6. How can I eliminate the spark plugs, wires or coil...Last thing I want to replace is the coil its pretty expensive and hard to get to. I will have a shop do the tune up but is there I way I can tell ahead of time what is the culprit?

Thanks,

You can take the plug wire from cylinder 2 and switch them to #1. If the code follows to cylinder 2 its that. Do the same for the plug itself. The coil pack runs for about $90 and is a 5 minute job.

Let's say all the plugs and wire set of 6 and the coil pack are changed and I still have the misifre on 1 and 6 what would be my next step to check.

Worse case I hear would be a cracked head but wouldnt it be bellowing out grey smoke out of the engine if it had a cracked head?

can anyone tell me if the white/grey smoke coming out of the tailpipe sometimes means something worse then a bad coil or plugs/wires? It seems like a crack in the head would be the worse case scenario but I thought if you had that it would be coming out of the engine department.

Also A side note...I hear a knocking sound coming from the engine when driving sometimes it only last a short time...please tell me this is not a bad case scenario..I will be peed

If you changed the wires, coil pack, and plugs, the next step would be fuel injectors. After that would be a compression check. Grey smoke from the exhaust is oil being burned.

I thought black smoke was oil being burned and white smoke is the fuel burning too rich?

Also another question if I get the check engine light to go off and the misfires stop will I gain any better performance, when I give it gas it seems dull..is that becuase of the misfires only 4 cyl running or could it be something else. I hope once I replace the plugs/wires and/or the coil and the problems stop the truck will gain a better pep to it.

Anyone?

Did you replace the plugs and wires yet?

I would rule out the coil pack since 1/5 and 2/6 fire as pairs. If it was the coil you would more then likely have all 4 of those cyls misfiring.

It could be cracked HEADS. I say heads because it would have to be both, 1 and 6 are on different banks. Was the engine overheated?

I would do a tune up first, then go from there. I'd do a compression test while replacing the plugs, youre already there.

Yes, If you fix the misfire codes you should have more power. If 2 cyls arent firing, then you would be down quite a bit of power.

It is not overheating. I have not replaced the plugs or wires yet going tio do that real soon. I pray it is not a cracked head cause then I will be out alot of money. Probably end up selling the truck as is then. Is it even benefitial to replace the wires?

I also notice it has been 29 degrees outside realatively cold for texas and when I cold start the truck it will idle for a sec then die on me....if I crank it again and give it some rpm's and drive it a bit it is fine..it seems to dip below 1k then kick back up so it is not dieing when I am driving just from the cold start.

if you are going to keep the car then change the plugs and wires, if not, then change the plug and wire from cylinder 5 to cylinder 6. if the misfire follows it, then you know what the problem is. i use 5 and 6, because if i recall correctly, they are quitem easy to get at without removing anything.

I got a guy coming out to do a complete tune up for 80 bucks labor and I buy the parts and suggestion on plugs and wires to buy from autozone?

I have always used motocraft plug wires. Champion i've also heard good things about. As for the plugs, I usually go to the dealer, $2-$3 more, and you know you are getting the best ones for your truck, and you can be sure the gaps are correct.
