Moab! May 31-June 2, 2002

I just signed up!

I have a very flexible schedule so tentatively, I'm arriving on the 30th and leaving the 3rd, but this can be extended.

Dunno if I'll have a passenger or not, but Becca is busy so can't come :(

Hopefully everyone will be as gracious to the 2WD'er as last year!!!

BTW, I can lead a stocker run or 2 if you want.

PS: Anyone who wants to caravan from TX, let me know.

I lead a run during Moab 2001 thankyouverymuch. Everyone enjoyed that run and absolutely nothing bad happened!!! I only needed to get strapped twice the entire week, both not necessarily due to lack of 4WD. There were many obstacles that I accomplished on the first try, too, that others had to try multiple times.

:p

Don't underestimate what power, a posi, and driver skill can do with 2WD.

DUMP BUMP IS MINE :D

Bobbed the bed 14.25 inches yesterday :D When I hit moab my farthest point back will now be my shackles. I cant wait. :D

I am trying to get pictures. I dont know anyone with a digital camera so that makes it a challange. I plan on taking a few pics with a regular camera when i go wheeling this weekend. It turned out pretty good considering I had never tryed welding sheet metal before. There is a little warpage but nothing a little bondo wont fix :D I also relize now that i am going to need to add at least a 1" body lift so that the tailgate will work  I am happy over all with how it came out. Next project is half doors :D

ok I got a couple of questions
1. Is silver sage offering any discount to us or is $59 a night the regular rate, ie do I have to ask for a special rate or person????
* 2. It looks like I am making the trek alone, does anyone want or need a roomy????????
3. If anyone answers yes to #2 then do you have a room reserved yet or not?

I will wait until the first of next week before reserving a room, that way if anyone already has a room reserved and needs a roomy we dont get too many extra rooms!

Gerald I would like to kinda tag along with you on some runs, I would like to do a few 3's and 4's the first day or two and then maybe a 4+ if I feel brave enough!!!!

And finally where are the rest of you guys out there?? Only 25 signed up come on guys thins is maybe a once in a lifetime trip, can you honestly think of a better time to do it or a better group of people to go with??????

* I have reserved a room and will be rooming with Mrboyle

again I ask where the heck is everyone 25 people come on its MOAB!!!!

I noticed that you don't have any trails listed for stockers yet. I would like to sugest chicken corners as one. I have done half of it before but I started late and it was getting dark so I had to turn back, so I would like to do that and I could even lead it if you would like.

Also, I will be in moab the end of march to go climbing and biking with my roommates for spring break so I can probably pre-run other trails if needed. Just let me know which ones.

James

Marshall,

They guy at the silver sage told me $45 a night... I told him I'm with the explorer group but I don't know if that helped or not...

Marshall, I am not sure if we get a special rate; we stay there because it is the cheapest motel in town (special price or not) I always tell the mgr who I am and that he can expect an Explorer Group. He remembers us. The manager is a kind man named Richard, but the motel is under change of ownership and I have no idea if he will still be there when we get there.

James, I am hoping for some input from everyone so we can do the trails that people are interested in. You just volunteered :D and I'll update the itinerary thread. Hurrah Pass and Chicken Corners look to be a combined six hour or so trip, with no time to travel to another area friendly to stockers, so it will be a short day probably. That means it would be good for a Sunday run that will finish in time for others to get an early start Sunday afternoon back to their home. I do not think it would make a good Saturday run.

I am still waiting for other suggestions. We want this to be a great time for everyone, but you have to speak up and suggest what you'd like to do. The itinerary is still open to change. Most of the modified trail suggestions are mine since few of you have let me know what you wish yet.

Com'n people speak up! What do you want to do?

Gerald,
I personally liked all the Stocker runs last year. TOW is a definate, and Klondike/Arches is always fun. 3D and it's related trails could be changed up, and there are many ways to slice it to change things up a bit. Dunno, but I'm always open for leading an Arches or 3D run.

I know that Moab is still 3 months away, but accommodations won't last too much longer.
For those of you that have never been there, this is one place that you definately want to see. This is as close to 4wheeling Heaven as it comes. :bounce:

well folks Tara and I aren't going to make Moab this year again. She really wants to see her family and meet our new nephew so we're going to take a two week road trip later this year instead and go drive the west coast and have a good old time!!!

I still have a room reserved at the silver sage if someone needs it, I'll hold it for now just incase someone wants it... I think they quoted me $45 a night...

Someone have a drink for me at the group dinner!!!

Alec, I would appreciate that. I don't want to burn you out on a particular trail though. Per example for me, Top of the World is a "Must See' but I've been there so many times I don't care to go again. I know you've run trails 1 and 2 (the Klondike/Arches trails) twice already but if you don't mind this year I'd love to have you be trailboss this year. Especially since we learned that Charles Well's book isn't too accurate concerning the connect route between 1 and 2 and holds the possibility of getting lost there. Those two trails, with the dino tracks and etc, make a great stocker run. Actually they make a great run for anyone because of the dino tracks and other neat stuff and views, even if it is a fairly easy trail. Will you lead it again?

Heath,

I haven't made hotel reservations yet, so I can take your reservations if you like.

Regards,
John

Guess I can lead Klondike/Arches again. Maybe I'll change it up a bit so I don't get too bored. It will probably be a bit easier for me with the lift and tires, so I won't take all the bypasses on Klondike.

3D can be changed up a lot. I wouldn't mind leading both days. We can do something that's different than last year. I did like the 60 mph "bajaing" that Peter led us on. That's where Splat shines! I'll need to reconnect my sways for that one! :bounce:

Most parts of these trails have places to pass, so if I attempt something I didn't last year, I could ask my "second" to pull ahead in case I need the strap. With good judgement though, I shouldn't need it with a year under my belt. How's that, the stocker trailboss being 2WD!?

Ok, time for bed....

Heath,

Any update on getting the reservation changed into my name?

Thanks,
John Johnstone

Alec, if you have alternate ideas to change around the 3-D trails that would be great, since it would offer a new experience for the participants. I'm open to suggestions.

Also Gemini Arches is really cool for stockers and we skipped it last year so it might be a good choice, since newer participants haven't experienced it yet. I'd like to go there again myself for fun if I have the time.

I AM STILL WAITING TO HEAR IDEAS. My brother just called me and since his Explorer crapped out last year he still wants to ride along on Fins 'N Things so that's another possibility for the modifieds. We did a combo with Porcupine Rim and Fins last year and it's a hoot, and good for those modifieds who haven't been to Moab yet.

Honestly, I am kind of flabbergasted that we are only three months away from Moab! and there doesn't seem to be that much interest. Of course, last year everybody and their pet dog signed on but less than thirty vehicles showed up, so maybe this is our true level of interest. We've put much hope in seeing some of the Sport Truckers out there and that seems to have fizzled too. What a shame, they have no idea what they are missing.

Whatever the level of participation, know that I for one am there and I can't wait to meet all of you.
