I've always heard you can put ATF in the power steering system without problems. Think its safe to drain all my powersteering fluid and fill it with Mobil 1 ATF?

I've always used Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in my X's power steering and it has 120,000 miles. I don't think it helps any way, but I have had no problems with it either. Only time will tell.

whats most important is that you change out the fluid every once in a while and make sure you have the correct level.

I have never used ATF in there, but I know it works. I personally use Valvoline synthetic power steering fluid, works fine. I swap fluid about twice a year.

If you suck the fluid out about 3-4 times in one week you will see it starts to run clean eventually.....

how do you suck out the fluid?

Well my power steering has nothing but Mobil 1 ATF in it now.

To drain the old fluid I took the return line off the PS cooler. A lot will drain out as soon as you take it off. Then I stuck a hose on the PS cooler, stuck the other end in a bucket and started the truck and let it run for about 5-10 seconds. Put the line back on, fill it up and go for a drive. My steering shuddered for a little while until it got all the air out.

Ford specifies Mercon ATF for 96 and later Explorer power steering units. The 91-95's specify Ford Type F ATF.

These ATF fluids are very similiar to the bottled power steering fluid; they're all hydraulic oils with slightly different additive packages. I've used them interchangably in the past, not knowing any better... :D

"How do you suck it out" - get a 99 cent turkey baster !!! (believe it or not)
