I have a 3G mobile internet stick to plug into the USB to allow the Explorer to be a "hotspot". It will not work. The internet stick is blinking as it should but the ford touch/Sync will not recognize the stick. I have seen posts elsewhere on the subject with no resolutions. I have hooked into my home wireless and the system works fine. I am new here and apologize if I have missed an earlier thread on the subject.
Are there any resolutions to this?

As far as I have looked there is no definitive compatibility list ford the Sync, only that most all that have tried don't work. I have successfully used my jailbroken iphone via bluetooth tethering (PAN) to create a mobile hotspot in the car though.

So nobody here has had an issue? or nobody has tried a usb 3G stick?

I would be curious of others experiences as well. I don't have mine yet, but this is a big selling feature for me and planned to use a sprint usb modem in the car.

I'm going to get a Rogers 3.5G USB Rocket stick this week and try it so I will let you know ASAP.

WiFi works great, I already have that working fine when Im in range of a HotSpot that I have access too.

Did the Rogers stick work ?

Verizon UMW190 is a no. My Evo is a no on PAN. I haven't had time for more testing yet.

Did the Rogers stick work ?

Sorry for the delay, I must have posted the results on another thread.

SYNC didn't even recognize it.

SYNC Customer Support says there are only 2 USB sticks that work one is now obsolete.

They did say the next upgrade of SYNC may allow for it to work so Im waiting to get my SYNC updated from GEN2 v2.4 to GEN2 v2.7

I will post results.

iPhone with 4.3 upgrade using personal Hotspot works great though.

I think we have been down this road.
On the Verizon Hot Spot, you need to add the mac address into the allowable connection devices, open up the port blah blah blah, blah blah..

...... Or just do it this way..........

Take it over to "Skippy'' at the Verizon store and say "Fix This"

(Works every time)

:D

Not being a smart butt here buddy. Let the kids at the phone company have a wack at it. Im Serious.

I am also trying to figure out how to get the vehicle mobile wi-fi to work...

So far I have understood that it only works under these two scenarios:

a) if you have a wi-fi USB router device, then you can plug it into your usb vehicle port and then provide internet to the vehicle occupants, or,

b)you have a smart phone that has the ability to turn "itself" into a wi-fi hot spot" then in this case, you can hook it up via SYNC and then share internet conenction to the occupants...

Am I missing other scenarios? did I get the above right? my wife and childern would love to be able to hook uop their ipods during long trips. I do have a smartphone (blackberry curve 8530) but I don't think it has the option to turn "itself" into a wi-fi hotspot.

Thanks.

Did the Rogers stick work ?

Here are the two modems that SYNC Customer Support said work with SYNC Gen2 v2.4

1. Sierra Wireless 598 CDMA Ev-DO

2. Sierra WIreless Mercury GSM 3G

The Sierra Wireless 308 HSPA+ 3.5G GSM will be recognized but not tested by FORD SYNC Dev Team as of yet. When I asked Customer Support about that particular modem he stated it is currently being tested.

The SW 308 wont connect as it needs to install software on the SYNC system and that's not permitted yet. They are hoping to have it on the approved list for the next SYNC v2.7 update.

Anyone have an updated SYNC GEN2 v2.7 and access to these two working modems I would love to hear how they work.

i might look at something like this, basically does the same thing and you know it will work..

https://www.orderrogers.ca/rocket/hotspot

Unless V2.7 adds more support for devices.. i will wait and see if anyone gets this to work on any USB sticks..

I saw that, I think your right, MiFi does what we are asking SYNC to do.

The idea of getting SYNC to do it was to alleviate the need to buy new hardware it was supposed to allow you to make better use of you're existing data plan.

Like you're existing cell-phone data plan or USM modem plan.

Im going to ask my dealer if I can get v2.7 this week so I will retry the SW 308 HSPA+ USB modem after that.

But so far were not there yet.

My phone can be a hotspot, so it's a redundant feature. But, I want MFT to do it so I don't burn battery, have to plug in, or turn it (hotspot) on. I want seamless :)

Right, my EVO shift can be a hotspot as well, but you have to pay additional monthly charges for it do so. The EX advertises this functionality, I'm disappointed that it is not working since that was a selling feature for me. :(

you still have to pay to use a a usb highspeed modem to get the wifi access...this was never going to be a "free" feature. USB highspeed modems will likely be more expensive than the hotspot feature you can add to your phone

In my case, I have a Sprint USB modem from work that I was planning on using in the car. Also, if you go through the tutorial on the MFT (someone posted a link on facebook, it's for the Edge, but same system), it shows them plugging in a cellphone via USB connection to work as if you were tethering your cellphone to a laptop. The fact that it doesn't work as advertised is disappointing.

try calling SYNC Support because because my iPhone4 with tethering DOES work that way

Thanks.

'm confused, what does the Sync do with Internet access. Yes I have a EVO that will turn itself into a wi-fi hotspot. With that capability any laptop/ipad in the car can connect through my phone.

So why would I want to connect my Internet connection to Sync?

I guess I'm not understanding the point.

MFT can BE the access point. Your EVO would use the PAN profile via BT, and save a bunch of battery. Sadly, HTC butchers the bluetooth stack.
