Do you have v2.7?

Apparently more modems were approved in the newer version...

Im getting v2.7 installed today and will try my Sierra Wireless 308 USB Rocket stick right away

Still 2.4 here. I'm waiting on my remote start install (part on backorder) before I drop at the dealer for a day.

Any luck with the Rocket stick on v2.7?

Any luck with the Rocket stick on v2.7?

Again no luck, even with v2.7.......Im sure Development Team is working on higher priorities although I did get a confirmation the Sierra Wireless 308 3.5G HSPA USB Rocket stick is one that's in testing and pending approval.

Im using my iPhone4 hotspot inside the vehicle and it works well.

To do this, do you have to pay more money to your carrier or does the MFT make it happen?

iPhone hotspot functionality came on the last iOS 4.3 upgrade from Apple but lots of other phones do it too.

Essentially your wireless carrier controls whether or not you can use the Apple provided HotSpot feature.

In my case the existing data package allowed for tethering to another device so it also allowed for the HotSpot feature.

Usually they want you to have at least 1 GB/month to allow the HotSpot because you could burn through it quickly.

If you have unlimited data then you're laughing.

Then when you open up another device it sees the iPhone and connects for internet access.

MFT isn't involved if you don't want it to be. It can also find your iPhone Hotspot and connect but theres no internet browsing functionality in SYNC yet.

I have unlimited but I think my carrier will want to charge me $20 more a month just for the feature.

I just picked up my Explorer and it has 2.4 installed (according to the sync website when I put my VIN in).

Is 2.7 available from the dealer?

Thanks,
R

Yes v2.7 is available at the dealer now but v2.8 is out by the end of the month so wait.

I use my ATT MiFi and it works great! However I don't plug it into the USB port.

This feature confuses me. I've seen promo videos where it says you can use this feature with my cell phone. If I understand this correctly, I should be able to plug my cell phone into the USB port and tether it to the Ex similar to tethering it to a laptop.

Now my cell phone (HTC Evo) can become a hotspot itself but it costs me money to do it and at that point I wouldn't need any help from the Ex to make that happen.

If I tether my phone to the Ex, is there hardware and software that creates a hotspot independent of my phones hotspot capabilities?

I agree, I thought if I hooked up my iPhone then the X would share my Internet connection.

I think Ford is being "sneaky" with promoting this feature. The videos do tell you that you can use a USB modem or cell phone tethered to the car to make it a hotspot. Apparently, this feature only works for a couple of modems on the market and very few cell phones. I tried it today with a Sprint USB modem, my HTC Evo Shift and my husband's Evo and none of them worked. This is really disappointing to me as I was looking forward to using this feature in the vehicle and it just doesn't work. Like you said, I can do this function through my phone, but it costs me money and it is totally independent of the car.

Same thing with Wifi, the Ex can hook up to a wifi connection to become a "hotspot", however there's no point because if you are somewhere with wifi access, the device (phone, laptop, whatever) can hook up to the wifi connection on it's own.

Really! Who are they trying to fool!

R,

Were you able to get this updated? As some mentioned, the v2.8 update has been made available to the dealer and you are eligible to have it upgraded. For those of you experiencing issues with your SYNC- I posted the following in another thread:

Since there are now various SYNC version updates, and since each of your situations may be somewhat unique or different, I would suggest that you contact our SYNC Support team to help you determine your best next steps.

SYNC Software Version 2.8 was released this week as a dealer-installed update for the 2011 Ford Edge, Explorer and Lincoln MKX. The SYNC Support team can review and troubleshoot your current concern(s), and if necessary help to facilitate the dealership conversation in obtaining the SYNC update.

The SYNC Support number is 800-392-3673 (option 3), and if you have any specific questions for me feel free to reach out to me via a private message. Hope this helps!

Let me know if you have any further concerns.
