First post, seems like a simple question, but I can't find the info. I am about to replace my lower ball joints with Moog. They have the grease fittings, but my question is: do they come already greased or do you have to grease them right away after you install?

Thanks

Any hints would be appreciated also. I like my knuckles with the skin on.

They come with grease in them, but it is a good idea to add some after the install.
I believe there is no such thing as too much grease

Adding grease is not a bad idea. But you can have too much grease. You don't want to add grease until it comes squriting out the seal. Just give them a few pumps and you'll see the rubber seal swell slightly.

too much grease in a balljoint is a bad thing.
overfilling a balljoint can cause the rubber to rupture a pin-hole, then you lose the grease obviously.

Welcome To The Forum! I just put them in my 96 and tried to grease them and they were full, but I would try to push one pump into them at least.

Someone did a study a while back on this type of thing. Maintenance free balljoints, tie rod ends, and universals tend to last longer than greaseable types, primarily because owners tend to over-grease them. When they are overgreased the seals can be ruptured which can cause dirt and whatnot to enter the joint. Also, most people aren't very careful about greasing, so they don't bother cleaning off the grease fittings before adding grease, introducing more dirt into the joint.

Thanks everyone for the advice. This seems like a big job so it may be a while. Hopefully I will have a good update when I'm finished.

I just did this. The biggest part is getting that hub nut loose. I was able to drive them right out with a hammer. The lower ball joint nuts were pretty tight as well. If you have a good impact with a 32(I think) or a 1 1/4 you should be good to go. Barring that you'll need a breaker bar and some muscle. Or a cheater pipe. :)
