So I've finally decided to regear and lock my explorer. With the large amount of city driving and lack of hardcore off roading that I do I decided to go with some 4.56's and a Detroit EZ-Locker.

I found a set of front and rear gears for a total of $250 from a guy over on the Midwest site and I found the EZ-Locker for $240+ship at www.nationaldrivetrain.com. I'm assuming these prices are ok since I haven't found anything cheaper. I still have a few questions though.

Is my 3.73 open carrier going to work for the 4.56's and the EZ-locker? I know that on my Jeep the carrier thickness had to do with the gear ratio...I was just wondering if the X is the same.

Also, I was wondering if there is any difference between the Detroit EZ-locker and the Powertrax Lock-Rite? I've busted two of the Lock-Rite's in my Jeep and I just wanted to try something different in the X.

Is there anything I'm overlooking besides the two questions stated above?

What size tires are you running? It seems to me that you'll be geared too low unless your running 35's or 33's. I personally think that you 3.73 will be just fine for 31's or 33's and city driving. It's a personal taste thing though.

Their are the 285's.....it's about 32.8 inches tall. I know I may be over compensating for the change, but I like overkill.

Arnie,
Try contacting Drive Train Specialists (800-521-0628) and tell them what you're thinking of doing. Last time I called, they were extremely helpful. I've never heard of different thicknesses on the carrier. I'm going to upgrade to 4.10s (from 3.73s) with No-Spin lockers and run 31" tires. I don't think there is much of a difference between the Detroit EZ-Locker and the Powertrax LockRite. TracTech (www.tractech.com) makes the NoSpin and "Detroit" line of lockers. Since you're going to have everything apart and you like "overkill" you might as well go with the NoSpin unit. But, $240 is a good price for the EZ-Locker. I priced NoSpin units at $330 each.

BTW, my dad's a Western alum - Go Broncos!

Good Luck, Dave.

i have heard of the differential splits like that..... its most common though on dana axles..... i am not positive, but i dont think the 8.8 has that problem... also, you have an open carrier, which means the locker will go in without a hitch.....

Thanks for your input and help guys. I'll look into that NoSpin unit too.
