The old XL is what I would say is equivlent to the new XLS. It has less bells and whistles then the higher up models, and a nice price tag to go with it. The XL was just a step below the XLT, and that is what the XLS of today is.

well now add a LIMITED to my list..my son just got a 96 LIMITED X 4x4 so now it's

97 v8 awd XLT
94 XLT 4x4(both mine)
96 LIMITED 4x4 son's

I have a 92 XLT and a 93 EB

I have a '92 XLT and I love it. Not just because of it having four doors. I also think that first generation X's look more like a truck. And I think that is cool. Gives them a more rugged look. The front of the newer models are being made (in my opinion) to look more like cars.

Not only do they look like cars but they perform like them to. Great for the "car show" guys but pathetic for us off roaders

I like the Eddie Bauer, I have an 04. I like the 2 tone paint over the monotone Limited. I like that there are no tow hooks up front. I wanted one with everything.

I've got an XLT, and I also happen to like it the best.

When I bought my XLT I thought they all were XLTs.

I have an XLT - When I get my next one it will probably be an EB.

it says xlt, but the engine and drive train are the same as a mounty... I call it a stripped down mounty...

2 XLT's here. The price tag was better than the Eddie and they both have a lot of the same features as the Eddie.

I'm so happy with my XLT, but I wouldn't mind any other package. I haven't noticed too many XLT's with sun roofs though. Mine has one, was it just not a very popular option? :bounce:

what do the trims stand for?? XLT XLS XL all that jib. I know XLT is generally the loaded package and limited and eddie bauer are XLT with different trims and shiny stuffs

I have a '93 E.B. complete with rust, scratches and dents.

If I'm right, yes, the XLS is an XL except for standard power locks and windows.

What would you vote for if someone had like one of those rare first gen Eddie Bauer 2 doors. Would it be a Sport, or an Eddie B, or both? I think I've only ever seen one of those. Anyone have one here?

I have a 96 xlt. Shocked, it came with leather (tan) and sun roof. Only thing different from EB version is message center and cd changer.

Xlt Baby!

Way back when, when my brother bought a new '93 Ranger XLT, he told me the XLT stands for "eXtra Luxury Trim." Hmmm...so an XL would be eXtra Luxury, and not just the trim? So yeah, that idea didn't work.

The trim levels do some weird stuff. An XLT can be loaded up to be pretty much an Eddie. An XLT Explorer (refering to 1st gen) is standard with power locks, windows, and air con, but my brother's Ranger that he bought off the lot, mentioned above, had none of those. Except for the aluminium wheels, I can't see how Ford considered that truck an XLT.

Original brochures state that the 1st gen Eddie has standard with a manual tranny. I have heard of a couple. Kind of a weird combo, but I wish I had one.

I'm still surprised by the lack of XLS's. There are more than twice as many Limited's... they are starting to look less limited than I originally believed.

As far as what the acronyms mean I've always figured there was some influence from European auto makers.
XLS = eXtra Luxury Sport
XLT = eXtra Luxury Touring

They don't use the word "Touring" here much to describe cars but across the ocean it's a pretty common description. Plus it does fit the additional conveniance options that are in the XLT while the XLS remains somewhat stripped down with only basic conveniances and what I think is a sportier look. Of course, I've never seen an XLS without the sport package (fog lights, aluminum wheels, step bars) and that's where the extra exterior appeal comes from.
