Look at the top of the 01-05 trac section in the sticky part there is a thread on a 302 expo motor swap. That is the closest you will get to direct swap. Some key parts to know it's easier to get the whole expo with motor, trans, wiring, etc. read the sticky all ten or so pages to know exactly what you need.

EDIT: the sticky...

Also look up the Rock Trac, Tx Plates and other members did a V8 swap to it. I plan on ding a V8 swap when my motor dies too, probably go older V8 with a carb setup though and stay away from all the electronics and emissions B.S..

Did you ever get a chance to research which old school v8 motor trans combo would be a good fit for the Trac?

I bought a 1989 F-250 drivetrain donor truck that has a 351 windsor with electronic fuel injection, C6 trans and 1356 manual transfer case. I hope to start building the drivetrain up this summer. I will be removing all the emissions b.s. from it and slightly building it up.

Damn, I had a chance on the same vehicle about a month ago, but was unsure of the size difference of the 351, and the engine compartment..

The 351w is the smaller of the 351's, the 351m or 351c are way too big.

The 302 is a tight fit for the exhaust. I'd say the 351w is going to limit you in exhaust even more, but I would love to see someone do it anyway. :) Honestly, hard to beat the old school EFI (MAF) from 89-2001 on the 302's. They are far more simple than today's setups and the engine computer is pretty stand-alone. Super reliable and efficient. The only choke you get is the bad exhaust manifolds and that is due to space. I am sure someone has enough talent here to make their own headers though. I am not one of them. :)
