I have a little big problem in my hands and a few questions to you People. Please if you can help me. I will apreciate it.
THANK YOU ALL

I have 1992 explorer sport 4.0 v6 manual tranny; but I dont know what type is y 4.0 L v6. I supose is a SOHC (163 hp).
.....IS IT??

Can I put in my explorer a 4.0 DOHC with out changing the computer?

You now that the explorer 92 have a diferent computer that the 95, 96 and the others.

I found two motors 4.0 L v6 but they was governed by the new type of computer. They have a black plastic admission Can I, anyway change it and use my old computer changing the wires and cables of the new motor and use the old one of my motor?.
What type is this motor OHC again?, DOHC? (I think its not)
How many Hp have the next version of the 4.0 L motor that I have?
Excuse my VERY BAD ENGLISH

91-96 use the 4.0 OHV...its a pushrod engine, no OHC or DOHC. to my knowldege, 91-94 are all interchangable, 95-96 would req a new computer and dont even think about putting in the newer SOHC...i am no expert, but i know there was no SOHC or DOHC for 91-94

Your '92 has the 4.0L OHV (traditional cam-in-block v6)

I don't even think they make a 4.0 DOHC, but I am not much of an engine guy.

The 4.0L SOHC (started in Xs in '97 and around 205 HP) uses EEC-V, while yours uses the older EEC-IV system. EEC-V started in '96 in Xs.

Others here should be able to help you out with the particulars. This is just some preliminary info.

Good Luck!

thanks udmsvt...

YOU GIVE SOME LIGHT TO MY DARK IGNORANCE

Now I just must to know how I can recognice a OHV motor

Robb, you said:

1991-1996 engines 4.0 V6 are all OHV motors?
Ca I use any motor maked betwen 1991 and 1996 with out problems?
Sorry if I m wrong

91-96 all used the 4.0 OHV, but if i am not mistaken, starting in 95 is when the OBD II diagnostics system which denotes to me a diff computer. ALL 91-94s have the 4.0 OHV that you need and the ECUs should be the same as long as the tranny was the same. on the top, it will (probably) say 4.0 EFI. i think the SOHC ones all say SOHC on the top cover. if nothing else, it should look kinda like your existing motor (duh).

Ok Im starting to understand...

I will make another question;

Can I change my old OHV 92 for a 96 or 97 OHC changing at the same time the computer ?
It is possible I think,
simple? maybe not...
expensive? SURE
BUT ...
Will be a hard work for a good mechanic?

Have it any secret that I must know before I take a decission?

Your best bet would be to find a newer ohv motor. I believe (not 100%) that they were made untill 99. Even with a motor 95 or later im sure that a couple of things will need to be adjusted.
