So in short, my rear timing chain has been rattling real bad for about a week and finally the engine is starting to backfire quite a bit. needless to say it can no longer be my DD and I refuse to get rid of my ford explorer. this "problem" has given me an opportunity to get some more involved projects started on it (v8/sas). I'm not sure when I'll get started but I hope to get a thread going with lots of pics of my tear down (i'm stripping it completely). Also after I get the engine out and inspect the damage I will probably be selling or giving away what I no longer need as of course you guys will be getting first dibs :)

Favorite SUV

When I decided to downsize from my Tahoe I looked at all of the mid-size SUVs. I liked the 1997 to 2000 Explorer Sport the best so I bought one. I would have preferred the V8 but it wasn't available. I'm sorry to hear about your timing chain problems but am glad that in the future you will be able to enjoy the body/engine combination I wanted.

I might be interested in your lower intake manifold and the VIS related components. Ford eliminated it in 1999 and I would like to compare the performance to the later fixed intake runner design. My PCM does not support it but I have a 3800 rpm activated switch to use instead.

Good luck on your engine conversion!

I will mostly be working on my truck on Saturdays and I have to prepare a few things first so It will probably be a couple of weeks before I get any REAL dismantling done. Ideally I'm waiting for a rear end collision explorer to show up somewhere. Any money I generate in parts is going right back into the truck.

My VIS system.. I actually lost the snap ring and am not sure if the valve in the intake is in the right position, doesn't matter to me since the motor is basically useless. If the damage to the motor turns out to be as bad as it seems you can just have those parts because the motor will be useless to me.

which motor do/did it have in it? im in need of a few parts myself.

4.0 SOHC. I may wind up parting out the whole vehicle as I am buying a 96 Bronco in a few days.
