Can anyone tell me how to remove the metal moulding at the base of the windshield on a 91 Explorer? I want to clean it out and rustproof the area.
Thanks

Welcom to the site, South Africa cool. I cant answer your ? but I can bump it up to the top.;)

THanks - most appreciated! even though 13 years old, it is still a most attractive machine in these parts - and since Left Hand Drive is illegal since 2000, (but cars made before that are allowed to have it) this adds to its value as a collecter's item.

Andre

If I am understanding you correct it is called a cowl.
I am pretty sure cowls on first gen's ae not removable.

You are refering to the painted metal piece, correct ?

My windshield is cracked and I'm planning on having it replaced next Tuesday. Before they replace it I would like to remove my old windshield weekend so I can repair rust damage in the channel at the top of the window. So I'm looking for info on how to remove the thin black metal strips which are attached to the bottom part of the window.

I'll get you some pics tomorrow...showing how it attaches and detaches.

That would be very helpfull, Thanks!

This isn't great, but here are some photos of that area, with the molding removed - you ccan see the bottom of the glass, and the little post that the molding clips on... for now I have 2 pictures of this area (mine is rusty too and will be fixed prior to starting "My Explorer Painting Diary" this fall.) The molding pics will come tomorrow. Suffice it to say that the molding clips into these posts, which are spaced about a foot apart across the bottom.

more to come...

I took this moulding off my 94 this weekend because I saw some rust "bubbling" up around it. I wish I had pictures, but I couldn't believe the amount of mud in there. Yes, mud-- years of leaves and debris falling in and rotting. I'm sure this mud never dried out and it just rotted away the area around the window base. Glad I caught it in time to sand and repaint!

Anyone who has an older X should remove this trim and check under there before the rust starts to show.

I thought I would post a link to my Windshield Rust Repair thread. It has lots of pics and info on fixing the rust damage with fiberglass.
