A couple of questions:
(1) what was your mileage for this type driving prior to the chip?
(2) What speed did you drive?

(1) what was your mileage for this type driving prior to the chip?

I was getting arround 15 mpg.
230 miles / 15 gallons of gas.

(2) What speed did you drive?

I was driving at 70 with cruse mostly. Untill the Escort 8500 saved my Dead Link Removed at least 6 times! God Bless my Fuzz Buster!

Matt, thats a nice gain in mileage. Do you have any thoughts on the relatively low mileage that you are getting? Could it be due to the tires?

i get about 10-11 mpgs on city driving.. and i usually never rev above 2000 rpm , but on highways. doing 70, i get about 16-19 mpgs.. i would think ur sohc should get better gas mileage than mine.. but then again.. aldive does have a point about ur tires..

also, how is ur speedo? is it off by alot? getting those bigger rims plus bigger tires must have made it off a litle, maybe ur odometer was off too

Hmmm, what gears do you have and what rpms were you running? Either you have low gears or you weren't running at an efficient rpms. You actually should be doing better IMO if you were just on cruise.

Also, how do you explain the variation in mileage you reported at different fill ups?

The difference in MPG could be explained by the G-D Smokey Mountains. Up 6% to 8% grade some places. Going down was really cool too. I had never seen Runaway Truck Lanes. They were on the down hill side of the mountains and were like Exits that went no where but up. Like a huge ramp for overweight trucks that could not stop or slow down suffiecnetly! Wow those were cool.

2000 rpm??? Thats why your mileage is crap. I gun our 00' 5.0 Mounty all the time and average 15-16mpg in the city and it's totally stock. And you have an intake and exhaust? Go over 2000rpm, for some reason people think lower rpms equal efficient, the 5.0 is very efficient in the 2-4000 range, I always take off from lights at 3000 or more. On highways our 5.0 Mounty will get 20-22mpg with the cruise on around 80-85.

Well, where would the sweet spot be for the best Milage on the SOHC?
Not sure on the sohc, seems like Aldive is the only one getting good mileage out of it. There was another thread on GAS and just about every sohc person was getting worse mileage than the 5.0 guys. I had a rental Ex. XLT w/ sohc engine last year after an accident. We had it the whole month and it would get no better than 13mpg in the city and couldn't top 15mpg on the highway, samething with all the guys I know w/ the sohc they get crappier mileage than all of my other friends with the 5.0 V8. Figure that one out?

My 94', well sisters now:( , with mods got about 15mpg in the city and about 20mpg on the highway.

Our 00' 5.0 gets 15-16mpg driving hard in the city and 20-22mpg on the highway at speeds from 75-85.

Matt, what gears are you running? Do you use synthetic fluids in motor, tranny and rear end?

my car is at like 2300-2400rpm at 78 mph, i have a SOHC with a 4.10 rear end. I get about 20mpg at best on the highway. I have always wanted to drive into those truck stop things, that is some pretty deep sand though, i think i would be there for a while but it would be fun while it happened haha

i used to get 18-20 mpg in my SOHC stock until I lifted it and put on 33x12.5s at which point it dropped to an expensive 13-14 mpg. I am not very happy about that. I drive like 70mpg @ ~2200 rpms (with the bigger tires) which should be almost 80 i guess b/c my speedo is off. I tried driving slower and I just can't get up the hills in VT with a load on the highway. I need to do something to get better mileage. i have a custom intake (basically a KKM).

the sweetspot for mine is around 2400 rpms. For the SOHC I'd guess somewhere between 2500-3000.

i might have to try that but I would be going like 90 which could cost me much more than some extra gas!!
