I'm sure this has been already asked. What is the difference in MPG from V6 to V8? Both 4x4 (a must) and tow package (preferred).

I'm interested in getting a newer x since we got 1 replacing the wifes 96 x due to a crash. She has a 02 x with the v6.

I learned that it was almost negligible. With in 2 or 3 I'd say. I've driven both (own a 4.6L) and can say it's well worth the power over the 4.0L.

If I had a choice I would have went with the V8, but I didnt so I have a V6. As for MPG according to my Torque App I average around 16MPG City which seems about right.

I have the v6 and the last couple of times filling up i have averaged 20 mpg and thats about 70% highway and 30% city.. soo i consider that pretty good.. although there are a lot of people on this site that average in the low teens even with the v6.. im glad im not one of those.. but if your only gonna be getting 2 or 3 mpg less and you want to be towing with it. then i would def go with the v8.. you will save in fuel economy while towing with the bigger motor

Good for the 4.6L 4*4 is 16mpg combined.
Id say mine is normally 14mpg, its hard not to use it, and the v8 is quite high revving.
Complete highway driving you may get a respectable 23mpg.

I've got a 2002 4.6 4x4, no tow package, so 3.55 axle gears. I'm usually about 12-14 city, but with a little freeway section, my mileage goes up to 15. Highway MPG has been 20-21. I've recently backed off the throttle a lot, so that's why I'm at 14-15 in town, otherwise it was consistently 12. From my research before I bought it, the 4.0 was giving 1 MPG better than the 4.6, so it wasn't worth it to purposely look for the 4.0 instead. I would have bought whichever one I found in good shape for the right price. Keep in mind, 4.6 suffers from bad coil-on-plug modules (they can fail with little warning, and can be expensive to change all of them) and the 4.0 has trouble with the timing chain guides, which apparently can be even more expensive if they aren't fixed in time.

My '02 4x4 4.0L with towing package (class 3 hitch) averages about 16mpg overall. Usually gets around 20 or so on the highway.

coils are a cinch to replace on the 2v 4.6L.
stay away from the 3v as the plugs are a disaster to get out. nicknamed shooters. people who own one shoot themselves.....
