MT's or AT's

Which one is better or mor preffered for a good all arroung tread. I will be in the San Diego area soon and am wondering which tire will be better for a little of everything. Please help, I am ready to buy new tires but can't decide which to buy. I have MT's right now but have seen At's do everything I do. I like the look of the MT's but can they go through mud better than AT's? Which has better traction on dirt trails and rock? Please let me know your prefference and experiences. Thanks

i have the MTs i wish i had the new at ko's the muds wear alot faster and are horrible on the road. i will definitly get the ko's next time. true the muds look cool but the new ko's look real good too

Yes the MT's are better in the mud. That's what they are made for. They have larger voids in the tread to release the mud as the tires spin. But there's a huge tradeoff in street performance and comfort.

The At ko's have worked very well for me. You asked about all-around use and I cannot think of a better tire for that than the ko's. I still do ok in the mud. The ko's still have a great tread with huge side lugs that really help give them bite.

Mac, I just went with MT's. I had AT's but they were only 31's ( Big Smile ) The MT's will do better in Mud, & dirt stuff, However my AT's did fine too. I had to be strapped once because I wasn't getting the traction from my AT's after crossing a creek and attempting a hill. The MT's would have worked there. I went with the MT's because of the aggressive look. You can get long life from the MT's but you need to pay a lot of attention to tread wear. Make sure your inflation is correct and you are wearing evenly accross your tire. This may require a different PSI due to vehicle wieght than what is printed on the tire. Rotate the tires every 5K miles to insure long life and make sure they are inflated correctly.

Road Noise is minnimul on my rig. I get more noise from the wind on my con-fer rack.
If you do a lot of pavement miles then the ATs may be better.

Discount mounted my tires on 2 different rims and put them on my truck to make sure I was happy with them. Ask your place to do a trial fit if you want.

I have 31x10.50 Dunlop Mud Rovers on mine and love them. It is an everyday driver - with clients to boot (I sell real estate). The noise is minimal, but highway driving takes a little getting used to. Check out how they look on my site...

I drove them both and, if you treat the MTs decently and don't drive around the corners like if you would be sitting in a Mustang, they will last almost as long as the ATs. Comfort wise, they are also almost the same. The question is not so much rational, which tire lasts 5'000 miles more, but, which tire you would like to see on your car for the next 40'000 miles. Decide with you heart, and you will be a happy camper.

Don't worry about getting traction in mud if you're moving to San Diego.

From what you say, the BEST tire for you would be the AT. But I totally understand going with the MT's. I did. And drove them for 45,000 miles, mostly freeway. You just have to remember you have no siping when it rains. (Which is not often, thus the above comment about mud!)

Only you can decide where your priorities are. I went with the aggressive Mickey Thompson Baja Belted tires for the performance and got great response to the looks as well. After making the 4 hour round trip to San Diego for meetings once a week, I decided that a lower noise level,a little wet traction, and the longer wear of ATs would suit me better. The Dunlop Radial ATs have performed well in the dirt, sand and rocks around here so far. I only take it off road about once every two weeks, but I drive the surface roads every day so the ATs will stay on and the MTs will get some beadlock wheels for the really fun excursions. (Unless someone wants to buy them at Moab. $450.00 cash, no dickering($650 new).)

I bought the BFG AT/KO's today. I will let you all know if it hinders my offroad style or not. I don't think it will since I saw tdavis in Hollister w/ th KO's and he went through the same mud pit I did. Good choice on the KO's. You won't be sorry. I have them on mine and can't get enough of them. Unless you get in the really gooey/sticky stuff, they'll do anything you ask them to. Have fun
