OK, I know this question has been asked over and over. I have found many threads on this subject but I didn't find what I was looking for.

I have a 2001 Explorer Sport 2 wheel drive. No engine modification and want to squeeze some additional mileage out of my gas. I drive about 50 miles a day on the freeway at 60~80 mph. I'm a little more concerned about improving gas mileage over increase in performance. But, any increase in performance would be great. (I would give 1 hp for a 1 mpg increase) Also, I don't want something too loud. I'm not attempting to impress anybody and don't like the rice burner or chain saw sound.

My question is what muffler brand and model would provide the best improvement in gas milage? Would a complete exhaust system prove better than the stock tubes with a new muffler? Would a custom 2.5 inch exhaust provide better mileage over the mandral bent 2.25 inch exhaust?

I don't have a large budget and am looking to save money on gas not impress the guy I just passed :burnout:

exaust

i have a explorer 4.0! i recently put a turbo muffler (autozone) on my explorer to try to save some gas milage. i think it actually did help a little. and it only cost 16.99 for muffler and 3.00 for turndown. the sound of the muffler is nice and deep not ,like a rice burner. to help also i put a k&n air filter which is supposed to help with the exaust, all i noticed is that it sounded deeper.

Flowmaster "The Sound of Freedom"....They're suppose to get better gas mileage (1-2 mpg) but I doubt many people can stay off the pedal to actually prove this.

Does anybody have any feedback/input on the tubing size, 2.25 or 2.5? Would a local made 2.5 inch exhaust tubing with normal bending be better than the 2.25 mandral bent stock tubing?

What series/model does anybidy have experiance with on a 4.0 SOHC V6?

Come on, I know your out there! :bounce:

Flowmaster 50 series with a dual 2.25" inlet and 3" outlet reduced to a 2.5" pipe out the rear. Sounds good, feels good. I recommend it.
