Hi all,

I currently have a Flowmaster 40-series hooked to dual exhaust pipes. This thing is LOUD. So loud in fact, that I have already gotten an illegal exhaust ticket. Basically, I want to change this to a muffler that will offer similar airflow (I am getting 2+ MPG extra) while being nearly as quiet as the stock muffler. Cost is an issue, I am trying to save money. Please recommend something that is cheap, quiet, and offers surprisingly good airflow.

I have found some flowmaster 50-series and 70-series that fits the bill, but unfortunately it is $150+.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Dynomax SuperTurbo would be my recommendation. Dunno what the price is for your vehicle though. Next would be a Gibson.

Also, I have heard that the DynoMax SuperTurbo has fiberglass dampening on the inside, which means that over time it will get much louder as it wears off?

I didn't realize that a 40 series was that loud. I have one, and if I ever get pulled over I'm going to be very surprised, I think it's a perfect loudness.

What about switching to a single in single out muffler, with a larger tail pipe? It'll still be louder then stock, but I wouldn't think as loud as 2 pipes.

Im currently running single-in single-out to the 40-series and then a Y split to dual 3" exhaust tips.

The Flowmaster 40-series is THE hands-down absolute loudest muffler on the market that doesn't have an offroad-use only sticker. Go to Advance Auto Parts. They have a list of like 15 mufflers and the 40-series is at the very top of the curve as the loudest muffler they sell. Driving up a hill the roar is DEAFENING..... although everyone does think my 4.0 v6 is a 5.2 v8.... My girlfriend HATES it, it drones in the cabin like crazy and between that and my dual 15" subs, I can't even hear her talk in the car anymore..... on second thought I am considering keeping the 40-series ;-) j/k

I am trying to decide between the Dynomax Super Turbo and the Borla ProXS..... I wish it was easier to get max flow stats in CFM for each and dB ratings for each.... although in every chart ive seen (10+ mufflers compared) the Borla is the quietest.... Any recommendations?

Do you still have cats? In all my experience the Flow 40 isn't very loud until you start running aftermarket cats/ no cats. I've heard plenty of 4.0s with flow 40 systems with stock cats and they aren't very loud. When I had no cats and my 40 dumping before the rear tire it was headache loud for my passengers, a single aftermarket cat made a big difference. Also it doesn't dump underneath your rig does it?

I ran suv 50 and man was that a sweet sounding muffler... loud enough you knew something was done but it sounded good... a v6 too loud sounds bad.. a toned v6 sounds sweet.. you will be happy.. advance for 90 bucks bro good luck

2006 u got sound clip of ur exhaust or video of it

theres a thread on the website about different mufflers and there Db ratings on here...

try a DELTA FLOW 40 Series... loud enough so you know its there but really quiet on the highway just cruising in the lower RPM's...

I'm in the same boat as you. My thoughts is I will get pulled over for a LOUD exhaust. Its just a matter of time. The drone at 2k RPM is unbearable too. But unlike you, I don't see the extra MPG. In fact, I see the opposite. I think I might be loosing 2 MPG because of it. I have a couple of fixes to eliminate the drone and the loudness but if I can't figure out loosing MPG, I might have to ditch this exhaust.
