I have a '93 4 door V-6 and the stock muffler is rusted really bad, I'm surprised it hasn't fallen off yet. would it be smarter to just replace the muffler or the entire exhaust sytem? there is heavy rust around the hangers and the exhaust tip. It has 198,000mi.+.

Thanks, any help would be great

Being in Maryland, I would redo it at least from the cats back. I say this due to the salt they use in the winters, and since your state does emissions inspections, might as well not give them any reason to fail you.

You can use any brand of aftermarket muffler, just pick the one you like the sound of and go for it. If you need help figuring out what an Explorer sounds like with x.. muffler hit up youtube.

I do teh exhaust myself and I usually do from Cat back. It's not only easier using all new pipes, it seems that 2 months after you fixed one section, the other section goes bad. Not to mention that you only have to fight with one pipe at the Cat to get it off nicely. the rest you can easily cut off since you are not reusing.

You don't need to replace the entire exhaust, but you can buy just the two rear pipes (on either side of the muffler, behind the catalytic converter and the tailpipe) and the muffler in a cat-back kit.

You can get performance kits from Dynomax and Flowmaster, both are about the same price as a standard replacement. The Dynomax is made by Walker, and the great thing about theirs is it has a lifetime warranty, so if it ever rusts through, you get a free replacement muffler.

You can also just have an exhaust shop or local Midas/Meineke throw on a standard replacement, but if you do your own work the exhaust isn't hard at all, it's more trouble removing the old one than it is putting the new one on.
