All you need is 5 inches of black duct tape, an old fountain pen lid and forget about that TSB. No more accidental activation of the power third row seat. Ghetto fabulous! Well, I'm latino so...Barrio Fabulous!!!

Yes, this is my way of being both insulting to the person that designed these buttons as well as solving my problem.

Genius, pure genius. Now I want to get a Limited just so I can use this fix.

gpzrider, in the second pic, what is that by your thumb? Is that a light? Don't have that on my 2011.

Yes power outlet. It used to have a nice little black plastic cover over it but it lost a tug of war with a grocery bag.

Sorry to hear about your loss.;) Silly me, I do have that. It just looked completely different in the photo without the cover. I guess that is what you call having a 'Senior's Moment'. :D

Maybe I haven't had mine long enough, but is it really something that happens that often?

My wife would kill me if I did that. :D

Mine broke off as well.

That is an awesome idea! I just got my 2012 Explorer (Limited) for almost a year now and I accidentally hit hose buttons a couple of times when loading stuff in the back. The 3rd row seat started to squeeze my stuff! Ford needs to put a cover on these buttons! I have a few pet peeves that they shld address:
- The dial for the "Terrain Mgmt system" in the center console. They need to make it out-of-reach for children. I didn't know my 2yr old son was playing with it and I drove for an hour using the Snow setting in a sunny day!
- The buttons below the Touch screen. It so sensitive, with just a soft touch it turn on my AC.
- The power fold for the bucket seats 92nd row). It folds on once and it slams way to hard!
- The 2 front column pillars are way too huge. I really need to make sure that there are no passing cars when crossing an intersection. At times, it can block your view.

Do you guys identify any other annoyances??

Ingenious! Simple!....................... And inexpensive!

Also looks like crap.....I'm not sure I'd be as proud to have something that unsightly stuck to the interior wall of my $50,000 Limited.

Sure, I have hit the buttons by accident once or twice and wished there was a good way to protect the switches....but that redneck fix is a joke!

you are missing the point. This is a 2 cent fix. You don't need to use this for everyday use, just for when you think you need protection from an accidental push of the button.

(It is a great idea to place plastic on the floor when you have muddy shoes, to keep from messing-up the carpet, but I would not advise you to keep plastic on the floor at all times... as it looks tacky. But it is a great idea if you are in a pinch and don't have, or want, rubber floor mats.)

I sometimes place my dog in the back seat, and he has accidentally pushed the fold button. This is an easy ingenious fix until FORD, or some other company, comes out with something better.

Thanks for coming to my defense Artnalex. Since automotive magazine, car and driver nor architectual digest has come to photograph my trunk, I'd say it looks pretty good. I carry a lot of stuff. Stollers, beach chairs, groceries, umbrellas, etc and each and every time I fill my trunk something accidently triggers that third row seat. Once I turned around and it was about to crush two bottles of Patron that I had just bought from Costco. Now, my preference would have been to spend $42900 + tax and license on a car that didn't have such a poorly designed switch. But Ford decided to torture me with it instead. Oh, I'm sorry but I may have I underestimated the cost of my repair. I did a much through analysis of the amount of tape I used, plus the depreciation of the old pen container I found, and now realize my fix cost me 12 CENTS. Sorry.

That's kind of harsh! Not really called for in my opinion. As mentioned it is a quick, cheap and easy fix that works and can be easily removed if required. While you are certainly entitled to your opinion, the wording of your post is completely unwarranted.:thumbdwn:

Does look like crap, but it does work so I do see the value in it.

I guess we are all entitled to our opinions aren't we?

A cover (perhaps a slightly larger fountain pen case with the bottom cut out large enough to expose the buttons) with a flip (hinged) lid and some two sided tape to hold it on would be much improved over the exposed Red Green duct tape fix offered.....even if it would cost double at 4 cents....or go all out and paint it black to match the trim and put the cost up to 6 cents.

But that's just my opinion......

What ever happened to:

If you have nothing nice to say, then shut your pie hole?

Back to the topic of the thread...

I like the solution! Invest a bit more and hit that lid with a rattle can. Maybe even flock it for a more luxurious look AND feel. :D

A little hot glue and a cheap hinge from the hardware store might slicken it up a bit more, while being completely reversible, lol.

I really dig the Red Green nature of this DIY project.

Happy driving :)

You guys have inspired me. I'm going to powder coat it black, put a nice ford logo on it, get some electronically activated mini hinges synchronized with my remote, hide the mounting bolts underneath the cover, and then post some pix.

Perfect! :D
