OK guys. Sorry for the delay. I had originally intended to get the new transmission from ped5stang in within 2 days or so but after all the massive amount of work it took to practically pull the motor just to get to the tanny bolts I decided this is crazy and I need to change things. So I yanked the motor all the way and pulled the pan and started modding.
first I cut out the interference.
Relocated the oil drain plug, tacked in all the pieces.
Anyhow I finished all that up, welded & painted.
I then modded my motor mount adapter plates. They are actually Explorer plates and you may recognize them. Anyhow they went from been shimmed, to been recessed. Now the motor sits much lower.
OK now that all that got taken care of a week later I can put in/pull out the transmission without pulling the motor any more. Problem solved.
OK so tonight I pull the pan on the tranny I got from ped5stang I'm a little worried. Like I've said before I've never owned an automatic tranny so this may be perfectly normal but it seemed bad to me.
The pan is filthy, very fine black crud stuff, grey metallic pasty type coating everywhere and there are a few bronze shavings in there. Even a dead cricket but I assume he climbed in sometime while the tranny was sitting
Here's a few pics.
See how nasty the magnet was?
Another shot of the sump area
Not sure that you can actually see it but what I'm circling here are bronze pieces.
So I cleaned up the pan and while I had it off welded in a drain plug to the bottom of the pan so I can do frequent fluid changes without pulling the pan.
A little paint to prevent rust once I got done welding it.
Inside of the pan all cleaned up. You can see the heat marks from welding in the drain plug.
Magnet nice and clean
So anyhow what do you guys thing about the pan? I hope this is not another dud. I was going to use a Napa inline filter on the tranny lines but at $30 a pop I've decided to take it back and instead I ordered a filter adapter from Summit so I can just use the FL1A filters since I plan on changing it frequently. Should be here tomorrow. I estimate either Tuesday or Wednesday I'll be firing up the truck. Got my fingers crossed the previous owner just didn't take care of the tranny and that there's nothing wrong with it. Supposed to be a 2000 with only 35k miles. It probably never had an oil change in its life.
Thanks guys
Malcolm
