Air Fuel

Awesome. Do you feel an difference or see any in the A/F ratios?

I can not feel any difference, I have been driving my other slow trucks so it masks anything I might feel. This truck always feels insane at wot.

I did notice it spends more time at 11.3 than 10.8 at wot, usually it is the other way around.

Hope to get to the track Thursday or Friday weather permitting, I will of course post the results.

Mufflers

Do those mufflers have an baffles in them or are they straight through?

The Flowmaster super 44 is called a chambered muffler. They are not straight through. They have plates and things angled certain ways to increase flow and change sound. Flowmaster has some cool video's of the exhaust flow on their site.

Rain

So Atco Raceway was supposed to have a rain date night tonight but they canceled it because of more rain coming. I was out in my garage and called it a night about 9. Just as I was walking in it started to rain. Go figure.

I sure hope it doesn't rain tomorrow night, I need track time!

Explorer wheelie

Props, that is a great picture, even with snow tires and going uphill.:salute:

Racing

Made it to Atco Raceway last night.
The truck felt very different, smoother and it even seemed to launch more consistently. It felt good.
Wasn't any faster though. Yet.
13.20's were my best times.

Now I must say, it was very humid. You know when you smell rain, and can kind of feel it. Dark clouds that looked like a storm was about to hit at any moment. It was also hot. Never did rain though. Others were complaining about running slower due to the high humidity.

The truck was running so different, and I am thinking some of that was the exhaust and some the high humidity. I got 8 runs in. It took me 7 tunes to get the timing and shifts dialed in. The fourth tune was the only one that skipped 2nd gear, I think that was happening because of shift points being too close together. I just made it back to the staging lanes in time for an 8th run before they closed them at 10:30. By the time I was done my last run it was 11:00. That's how many vehicles were there.

A few vehicles broke down and had to be towed off the track. I never even got to tune the A/F which is still off a bit. I am going to use a datalog from last night to make adjustments for the next time I get to the track.

Boost

I wish I could say yes or no but I didn't even think about looking at boost until I was driving home. It was then that I wished I had the capabilities to datalog boost with everything else. I have been thinking of adding a GM MAP sensor for that purpose. I tried to look in the videos but that didn't work out so well either.

The Pivothead Glasses I use to record, stop recording by themselves sometimes too. I missed a great race I had with a mustang. The mustang was about a tenth faster but my reaction time was .4 quicker than theirs so I took the win. Went back to view the video and it had stopped just after I started the recording. lol.

I plan to get back to the track when possible and tune the A/F, and watch the boost gauge. Not happening next week though, I have to work a double shift.

Video

I just watched the video of the back pressure test with the dual exhaust and I see that the boost gauge is going over 15, looks to be 16 or 17 still.
I guess the engine (cyl heads etc) is the restriction towards the boost.
Man I could really use some custom cylinder heads on this thing!

heads and cams all the way!

Think you could do cams with the motor in the truck?

Heads

I agree that at this time the best performance bang for your buck will probably come from improved heads. But as you pointed out:

Supersix Motorsports has some nice cylinder heads. Things is I wont put $2,000.00 heads on unless the pistons/rods are upgraded, I would hate for a piston to break from detonation or other unsuspected problem and have the pieces smash up the cylinder heads ruining them. Otherwise I would have them on already.

Heads

2000streetrod,
That's for sure!
I couldn't have said it better myself. lol.

I don't know if I would do the cams. I heard they may have a lopie Idle.
How do you spell lopie?

Lopie idle? really? Your worried about that at this point?

Idle

Yes, My truck Idles just fine now, besides that I have to get through State Inpsection every two years.

I have some more things planned for the Explorer this year, I am not done yet.
For one, I am sucking hot air from under the hood. That will probably be the next thing I tackle. Then there is this Ford Racing Throttle body I got back in December. I decided I am going to remove the factory amp since I have an aftermarket Head unit. Then I am going to move the Sub amp to under the plastic panel in the back. I may move the car PC too, just not sure yet.

I would like to lower the vehicle a little too, have to be ready to do the alignment right away afterwards though. I plan to change the right front upper control arm from a 2 piece to a 1 piece while adding the camber/caster bolts.
Then there is the hood, I have a spare buried in my garage, I want to dig it out and put it on if the paint matches perfectly. If I recall correctly it did. There is a place in Pennsylvania that supposedly makes fiberglass hoods for the Explorer too. I would like to drive up there and check one out in person.

All in time I guess.

I was thinking of a cam with higher ramp rates and higher lift, so longer duration open and work well with boost.
I ended up with a cam with 114lsa, so my expectations are a close to factory idle.

We don't have any emissions testing in our province, so I keep forgetting about smog tests.
I poked around, and see your options are limited for cams. Surprising, considering all the mustangs this motor has gone in for so many years.

I'll be quiet now. :)

No emission testing

Must be nice! lol.
I am currently working on getting a fresh air intake going. I had to move the "Spal" fan controller.
May not finish it but at least I finally started working on it. I have been thinking about it since I put the GT500 supercharger on.
