Completed Project My 98 super charged EX

Use this prefix for completed projects that are not "How to" articles or threads asking for help.
1998 Explorer 4.0 SOHC
Bought it with a melted alternator/wiring harness from a junkyard for $1,000
Fixed it, drove it for two weeks, then I boosted it.
Started with an M90 supercharger kit from www.Bansheesuperchargerkit.com
Upgraded to an M112 Lightning supercharger that was a prototype kit.
Next was the M122 off a 2012 GT500
I have reached 20 lbs of boost (with ARP head studs) and a 12.83 in a quarter mile.

LOL
No need for a tank to increase capacity, just add another intercooler radiator!

Very nice. The one I picked up is much the same dimensions as your bottom rad.
Nice job on the mounts. I'll have to try something like that.

I have the same crap ebay pump as you. I should just toss it in the bin. It's way to small to do anything/

tank

Tank did you say?

Amazing. With your attention to detail, I can kinda see how you were able to pull the wheels on your ex.

On second thought, I still can't see how you 'pulled' it off.

holy crap.... this thing basically makes mine look like I'm "playing" around! You have no idea how amazed I am that you pulled the tires off the ground, even with it being a sport.. It's a good thing you have a picture of it because I don't think anyone would have believed you otherwise!

I think you are proving to all of us how important it is to intercool these things.

What size tires and type are you running now??what air pressure do you run at the track and do you juice the tires at all? Love the pic though;)

great......this is making me want to get off my ass, and start figuring out the setup that i got off don.
and andy, yup, makes us look a tad sheepish.....

Seriously, it makes me want to begin phase 2 of my project, but then again I remind myself how much that will cost and I start to cool off again. haha

You might wanna get your tubes wielded on your rear, when you start launching that hard on an 8.8 the plug wields pop and the tubes will get misaligned and if unnoticed bearings breaks shafts ect all domino to destruction, my buddies 03 cobra that had been converted to solid rear with c clip Eliminators did just that, then his brothers 04 saleen mustang did almost the same but it caused him to snap a shaft,

This happened to James Henson on his Gen 2 SOHC. James 'had' a rear mount turbo setup. It did not end well for him, or his truck. The accident was extremely bad, and it was a life changer for him.

This is an extremely good point that we all need to be careful of as we increase power output. I have seen strange axles used in place of the stockers by a member here. Do you have a picture of what you mean by welding tubes?

I can try to get my buddy to take a pick when he gets home , what we ended up doing was crude, one of the guys milled some billit into blanks that we put in place of the carrier berrings and axle berrings then we found a stainless rod about 1 1/2" and threaded and slid it all the way through, homemade alignment tool, then after he ( my buddy is a pipefitter) spent hours checking for trueness wielded the tubes to the housing with nickle rod,

I've researched this alot and this is the proper way of doing it but most of us can't or don't have the tools to true it first:( I just put 4 stitch welds on each side making sure not to over heat it;)

oh boy....
That does sound way past the capabilities of most of us here (Me for sure).

If I get to the point of actually making some real power, I think I'll go the strange axle route and replace the axle bearings at the same time. This may not be the best solution, but it is better than doing nothing.

This makes me smile because all the people who say you cant make these things fast or quick, I have grown up around big fords, galaxies, fairlanes, ect lots of FE r code stuff hell the 67 Shelby gt350 with a little 289 ,all big heavy bricks but when setup properly they pull tire and haul a**.

I have to tell you that you have done a lot of stuff to your truck that I really like. The 347 is the way to go, then the transfercase swap, awesome. Two people I work with said put caltracks on my truck after seeing the wheels coming off the ground and after I told them I don't want the front wheels coming up because I launch with all 4 (automatic 4wd(control trac)). Then I find your thread with the caltracks. Mine are ordered by the way. Just got 2 of my 9 way adjustable shocks today, other two should be here tomorrow.
If I had your truck I would intercool it, double the boost, and change the differential gears. I figure .8 for doubling boost, .5 if you could go with 4.88 gears, may be too much unless you have tall tires and a good overdrive (mine is .75 to 1 if I recall). That would put you at 12.21?

Tires

What size tires and type are you running now??what air pressure do you run at the track and do you juice the tires at all? Love the pic though;)

The tires are still 255 70 16 Goodyear (worked for them for 16 years before I started teaching) Wrangler RTS. They have a skinnier tread than most tires of the same size and max tire pressure goes up to 44psi I don't run them that high). They are lighter than a lot of tires of the same size too. As far as tire pressure goes, I start out at 32 when I am at test and tunes. Then I drop them till there is no more slip. After putting in these 4.88 gears I got down to 25 psi and kept getting slip. I was wondering what tires were breaking loose till someone told me the fronts were coming up. After I get the adjustable shocks and caltracs on I will have to experiment with adjustments and tire pressure. Its a shame Atco Raceway is supposed to be open this weekend but its calling for rain or snow. Then Atco will be closed till next season like all the other tracks. I was trying to figure out what juicing the tires was. If you mean doing burnouts then no, not anymore since last year I broke two sprag clutches doing a 4wd burnout @ 3000 rpm's. Now I drive around the water.

I am jealous of your paint!
What did you get off Don?

What do you have planned for phase 2?
and by the way your truck looks great underneath, everything I have done still looks like crap. I don't paint or clean the outside of anything under there. As a matter of fact last year I found pictures on Dave Milcarek's site from Atco and I saw all the rust on the front crossmember and control arms. I actually hit them with a little undercoating just so they would be black. 30 second spray job. Sure glad I did that. Maybe I should do the rest of the frame and stuff under there. lol.

Awe man, you and James scare me. I know what you mean. I have his thread in my mind. His axle broke, but I also read about the axle tubes with the plugs coming out and how they should be welded. I believe I have automotive guardian angels right now. Every time something breaks it happens at home or blocks from my home. I think I am driving on a prayer.

Man that's kind of a skinny tire, surprised your getting any traction especially with 4.88s..lol .how many rpms and what gear you in by the end of the track??we call it juicing the tires, basically chemicals you put on your tires to make them stickier. Cant remember the name of the stuff they sell, we use to make our own.

Are you trying to make the rear stiffer by adding the coilovers? Wouldn't that make the front come up worse?

Side note..man I need to get back to the track, I miss those days!!:(
