Talk to Brett and 410Fortune.

The guy for this is 410Fortune. He has a BII and swapped a 4.0 in it I believe. If he doesn't reply to this thread, throw him a PM or email.

And Welcome Aboard!!!!!

I'm finishing putting one in my Toyota from a 95 Explorer. It's not that hard to do, but you might want a wiring book to trace the circuits. I used the Explorer engine compartment harness and stripped it down to just the parts I needed for the engine and guages. The electrical parts and the quick connects on the fuel lines are the only probelms I ran into. I was able to modify the stock parts to meet my needs. Good luck with the swap!

If you have the electronic transfer case, there is a website that tells you which pins control which shifts on the motor. I'm just going to build a little circuit to drive the motor when I push the buttons.

Hello! I have done several 4.0L conversions.

I assume you have the 2.9L right now?

Email me and I will send you all the info you need.....

I no longer build the wiring harness for people, I just dont have the time but I can get you started..the wiring harness is the only things that is not a basically bolt in affair. You will want to use a 93-94 OHV 4.0L from either a Ranger or an Ex, the Aerostar 4.0L will work but thei wiring requires more modifications then it is worth....anywho without getting into all the details here and re-typing everything I have typed 600 times before email me so I can forward it to you....

Alec:

thats actually how I met Brett some 4 years ago, I had done my 4.0L, he caught wind of it, turned out we lived less then a mile from each other (no kidding) and so he came over to check it out, two months later he had a 4.0L in his BII and I had a lift with d35 and 8.8 on mine :) the rest is history.....

I have seen one. Yes they did make a few 90 BII's with a factory 4.0L, but I have also seen many that were done later and people tried to pass them off as factory. No sirreee Its easy to tell the difference, the early 4.0L had a single 02 sensor, a map sensor, and the smaller under hood fuse panel if the 4.0L BII does not have these, it is anot a factory 4.0 BII.

Ford did some weird stuff, I have seen 89-90 BII's with D35 front ends while still keeping the MAS 2.9L and the 7.5 in the back, I have seen a 91 Explorer 4.0L with a rail mounted dual fuel pump setup (similar to a 2.9L), and it goes on and on, its almost like they just kept using parts till they ran out......

410 there is one down the street from me for sale with a factory 4.0 in it:D

Yes, The 4.0L swap is straight forward for a BII. Did mine over 2 years ago. I went from a 2.9 5spd to a 4.0 auto. So my conversion was a bit more involved b/c I was switching trannys. I used the the 4.0L, auto, and 1354 auto tcase from a 93 EB. Anyway, like Jamie said, the wiring is the hardest part of the entire swap. Most everything else bolts in.

One thing I also recommend doing is ditching that stupid tranny mount and using the solid style mount from a 91-94 Explorer. It made a big difference in my truck. You'll have to grind down the rivits on the frame brackets, and after that, there is only 1 hole to drill on the left side of the frame.

Feel free to email me or Jamie with any questions.

Brett

most info yet

This thread is starting to be a great place to find out info on this swap 2.8 2.9 to a 4.0 / between all the links and hints to doing this project i sure hope it helps out the next guy cause i sure wish i saw it before i had started this trip, the only thing we are missing is the 4 wheeler 1997 issue info and 410's wiring info and we will have this subject covered a to z!!!!:)

Maybe a MOD can combine this thread and Dead Link Removed since they are the same thing.

4.0 running but not charging?

Ok so far so good on the swap its running sounds good but no tach and its not charging anyone know how to get it to charge?Im told it has a voltage sensor wire, there is 3 wires in one plug 1 single plug and the main 12 volt bat wire looks like two smaller wires from the three wire plug run back into the explorer harness does this have to be tied into the old bronco2 harness at the dash?
