HELLO ALL!! I AM HAVING SOME PROBLEMS WITH MY 1999 FORD EXPLORER XL AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. THE CAR IS IDLING HIGH AND I CAN SMELL THE EXHAUST FUMES HEAVY. APPR 2 WEEKS AGO THE CAR STARTED PUTING AND HESITATING A LITTLE, THOUGHT I NEEDED A BATTERY BUT I NEEDED AN ALTERNATOR. AFTER THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, THEN I TOOK THE CAR TO FORD AND THEY SAID I NEEDED A PART FOR THE ENGINE WHICH I CANT PRONOUNCE. NOW THE CAR IS STILL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM, NOW THEY SAY I NEED THE CATALYTE CONVERTER, WHICH WOULD BE ANOTHER 300 AND ALSO A TUNE UP. I THINK THERE IS SOMETHING ELSE WRONG WITH THE CAR BUT HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO. PLEASE HELO ME!!!

you could cut the cat outandrun straight pipe to muffler if cat is cloged and most mechanics will do it for cheap because they can sell the cats or do it at home and also the check eng light only comes on if there is a problem with exhaust

What code is it showing with the CEL? most autoparts chains have free access to an OBDII.

Crackerjack - what you are telling him to do is federally ILLEGAL. I doubt any legitimate honest shop would do that. If you bring your vehicle to chopshops like that I feel sorry for you.
