my front end douns like a fishing rod

k so i was driving my 91explorer xl manual 4x4 like 2 weeks ago and my front left tire started sounding like a fishing rod.. and kept coming and going.. then like a week ago the right side started making the same noise... i'm assuming it's bearings, but also could be something int he 4wheel drive... has anyone else had this? and if so is it easy to do the bearings on these?

I am guessing it sounds like a ratcheting sound.

You can do a search for wheel bearings on this forum and see how to do them on your 91, with pictures, etc.

they are not too difficult.

It could be many things including the auto hubs, the wheel bearings, axleshafts, etc but basically all of those require removing the wheel and rotor to check things out.

just be lucky you are not doing bearings on a 2002 as i did last weekend. wow what a job that was.
