Just bought a '96 XL 4dr, 4.0L, 4x4 from a government auction. I needed something to tote my canoe around because my wife won't let me put it on her Civic.
It's a former DNR forest ranger truck with 232,000km (~144,000mi). A cylinder misfires, it seems to shift OK but has one of those mysterious flashing "O/D OFF" light issues, the HVAC controls appear to be stuck on 'incinerate.' But I'm not complaining - I paid less for the Explorer than I did for my canoe
On the plus side, it has a trailer hitch, the body pretty solid, the 4x4 works great, and it has some good A/T tires.
