so after a very long converstion with gmanpaint jtsmith and some other forum members on the chat lastnight and today i went out and looked at my local junk yard. i found a 3.73 rear axle front diffy and everything else i need up front to convert to 4x4. i didnt care about the transfer case as i am going to use a 4406 and the tranny well lets just say it had 223,000 miles on it and it was for a v6. all of this for 300 bucks if i pull myself. if i can get this going soon i might have to make the trip to SMORR :)

v6 trans wont work, just in case you were wondering?

You can rebuild your current 4r70w and install a 4x4 tailhousing and output shaft, or buy a used 4r70w from a 4x4

i just figured the v6 tranny wouldnt work well b/c i have a V8 just thought the bolt patterns would be off. well my explorer right now is my DD and i can have it down for a rebuild on the transmission unless it could be done in a weekend by a shop. i would prefer to buy a low mileage 4r70w

hmmm well somehow you are going to have to convert your 2wd transmission to be a 4x4 transmission so you can bolt up a t case, this REQUIRES parts AND a rebuild

so a used transmission then?

You can check out Seth's V8 conversion thread, he had a 2wd 4r70w that he has converted to a 4x4 himself, along with a rebuild.....you can see whats needed and why

good idea, you need a 98-2001 4r70w from an AWD 5.0L sploder, I say 98+ because the 96-97 did not have all the updates your 2000 model has, you can use a 96-97, but 98+ is better

heck these days you can find an entire V8 AWD truck on craigslist or auction for $1000, wrecked......gives you everything you need in one shot, except the 4406 of course

I might be picking up a 5.0 AWD that I would like to convert to 2WD. Do you currently have a 2WD tranny behind your 5.0?

I am under the impression that it is easier to swap trannys because the tail shaft is the last thing out and the first thing in during a rebuild.

Sorry, my deal fell through. Looks like I won't be getting that truck. My goal was to build a 2WD prerunner. You might have some luck if anyone else has the same ambition. Back to looking for both of us...
