My Touch Nav sucks

My ford 11 explorer limited is great just not to happy with nav its slow and for some reason it always takes the streets in stead of taking the highway and the streets actually takes longer does anbody know how to fix this everything in route preferences is offf

menu,settings, nav settings, then there is a few settings in nav. Not sure the name of the one you want. Route preferences a think.
It's in the book.
