yeah no kidding. there are so many posts on this board regarding customers being screwed by dealers it's a joke, and this is just ONE board (though it;s the best one).
I got so sick of it! I used to take my truck and cars to anybody to do the work, and I got screwed every single time. SO over the years I got tools and started to wrench. now I think I know a good deal about most vehicles and just about everything there is to know about this family of Ford trucks. So I started doing everything myself. Started by dropping my first transmission, took 3 days! 5 years later I converted my truck from a stick to an automatic in less time then it took to do my first clutch. So feeling good about myself and the quality of work I can do on these trucks I took my newly automatic converted truck to an exhaust shop, turns out when you put JBA headers on a OHV 4.0L and mount them in a BII with a 93 A4LD and 84 BII shift linkage the 02 sensor runs right into the shift linkage under the truck. Simple fix right? take it to a very trusted exhaust shop and have them re-locate the 02 sensor bung in the Y pipe. Routine $35 exhaust shop job right? Wrong. First they talk me into a new 02 sensor bunk for both sides, makes sense I want them to match (their weld in bunks have the 02 sitting further into the pipe), so then I start talking to the guy about how my JBA headers leak a little, well he talks me into having the entire Y pipe re-designed to fix the leaks. Great! No problem! go back later that day to pick up my truck, inspect it from underneath, work looks decent, pay the man. Start it up and it runs like crap!!! CE light, barely will idle. Drive it home anyways thinkning it;s getting a new signal from the 02's and they didnt reset the EEC. Reset the EEC to no avail, same deal. Take it back to them. They basically tell me they have no idea whats wrong. We look over my truck together for about 2 hours, cant find a single wire melted or thing wrong.
Took the truck home for further diagnosis, throwing about 10 codes, 02's etc... Replace the 02 sensors. Same deal. diagnose everything under tyhe sun with my OHM meter I ran through every sensor that was throwing a code. I took my wiring harness out of the truck (I built it for the 2.9L to 4.0L conversion) thinking something was wrong. Rebuilt the entire harness to ensure it was right (needed it anyways) same deal. After 2 weeks of Brett and I trying to diagnose the problem I finally bit the bullet and took it to the local Ford dealer. The service guy calls me later that day and says they havent touched it (Surprise, surprise). So the next morning I go in there, talk with the guy and he's basically saying they arent gonna work on it because it's a BII that has been converted to a 4.)L and it's never gonna run right. So I look over the truck with the guy and ensure him that in fact I did the conversion two years ago and everything works perfect. After he realizes that I do know my stuff and that it's not just a conversion that never worked, he agree'd to do a pin out on the computer, he says "I'm confident I can fix anything Ford, it;s just a matter of how much time" so I'm thinking "great there goes my life savings, that exhaust shop is gonna pay". 3 days later they call me up. The computer is bad, $298 for a remand one, have it here tomorrow. GREAT! it was that easy, new brainbox and I'm good to go. I didnt try swapping computers because I figured it;s throwing codes and running the KOER and KOEO test, so it must be working. Wrong, okay lesson learned.
So I pick it up to the tune of $650 for diagnosis and a computer. I ask the service advisor assigned to my truck, "what kinda warranty do I get with this". He says "i't son the back of your receipt". What service! Happy to be back ono the road with my newly built automatic truck.
OKay so I set up a meeting with the owner of the exhaust shop, nice guy and a friend of a friend. He agree's to pay 1/2, since he was out of town and didnt do the work he didnt want to pay the whole thing. I figure cut my losses thats more then most shops would do righ there. We came to the conclusion that the truck was mig welded on with the key in the ON position. It also fried the voltage regulator in my alternator and any fuse that was getting power with the key on (Heated 02 sensors were first thing to blow).
So there I am happy as can be, get all the bugs worked out of my new automatci setup over the next few weeks, just in time to join the Serious Exploration guys in MOAB. truck made the whole trip no problem!! Get back to Denver and BLAMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Starts doing the exact same thing! CEL, codes, etc...this time I;m smarter so I borrow a buddies Explorer computer and plug it in , problem gone.
Take the computer (brainbox) back to the Ford dealer and state my case to my service tech. Okay, no problem will order you a new one. Calls me back later that day. "We cant warranty this computer". Why not I ask. "Well because when I punch in your VIN for the warranty info it comes up as a BII with a 4.0L computer" Ford wont warranty items hooked up to non Ford built items (hes talking about my wiring harness and conversion). I say okay that sounds reasonable but guess what, the warranty you handed me when I asked about a warranty says in plain english that if a part was installed by you and not fooled with (in about 20x's that many words) it's covered for 90 days. They refuse to hear my claim, giving me the "Sorry we cant help you, I'm on your side" routine. So I call the Ford 800 number and file my complaint, they call teh dealer, get back with me and say "No warranty, we support the dealers decision". I am calm and collected and continue to move up the ladded at the Ford dealer, every single person I talked to is on my side, They all agree it should be covered under warranty, once I state my case. However the service department refuses to honor the warranty. Claiming that Ford will not re-imburse them for the $$$ so they could never warranty it. By this time they are getting sick of me and start to lie! They are telling me that the service guy told me up front I would not get a warranty, and that I knew that from day 1. So I give up on Ford and filed a claim with the Better Business Bureau. Guess what! month later the dealer agree's to pay 1/2 (surprise, surprise) so long as I know they wont work on my truck again!!! HAHAHAHAHA! like I would take it to them ever again, and we bought 5 cars/trucks from them....no more, I couldnt believe they were willing to give up a repeat customer (My family) over a $300 computer! Anywhoo in the reply letter to the BBB from the dealer they stated several times that I (meaning me) was completely aware that I would not get a warranty. So when I went to pick up my check I made it very clear to the jerkoff that I in fact was told that the back of my receipt had the warranty on it, and that if they didnt plan to honor a warranty under these circumstances again they damn well better add a paragraph to their existing warranty.
So all in all I got lucky, I mean I actually got some $$$ back after all is said and done.
I went to a junkyard and bought a used EEC computer for $60, works perfect to this day.
So now if I can learn how to weld the only thing I will ever have to take my truck to a shop for is alignment, and you better believe I'm gonna stand right there and watch over the guys shoulder........
