'00 North Face (XLT?)
Hi Folks,

Sorry that I only tend to be around when I have a problem!!!

This time I have 3.

The first two may or may not be connected.

I have a 2000V Explorer North Face which has an Nicholson/McLaren AG multipoint LPG system fitted to it.

I ran out of petrol on Saturday morning (luckily I managed to coast onto a petrol forecourt) - I had plenty of Gas but it hadn't reached operating temperature so hadn't kicked in.

I filled the tank half full with petrol and drove off - I expected it to run a little lumpy for the first minute or two but after 20 miles it was still running like a bag of spanners (the engine light had come on either immediately or soon after restarting) it seemed to be OK'ish when I floored it (in Neutral) but got progressively worse. I tried switing to Gas again and it made it even worse. I also tried turning off and then back on again to no avail.

I realised that it wasn't going to pass so I headed for the garage.

The responsiveness then really started to become bad - like I was pulling away in 4th gear or the clutch was slipping.

As i got closer to the garage the transmission light started to flash at me (the one that comes on when you push the overdrive button on the side of the gearshift).

I managed to limp to the garage where it is now. They haven't yet had chance to look at it so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas??

The third problem I thought was down to negligence on my part.
I've been getting a knock/thud from the N/S/F wheel for a good couple of months now which I thought was simply a case of wheel balancing as the wheel started to shake at 70 mph+ - life has been hectic and i hadn't had this done so it was getting worse. However walking past the car the other day i noticed that the wheel seemed to be leaning in at the top ( and that the tyre looked liked it had bite marks all along the inside of the tread)

The garage have called me back to day to say that on inspection there appears to be a different set up on the n/s to the o/s - the O/S appears to be adjustable and the N/s doesn't. I know that tis isn't a very good explanation but just want to be able to talk in his language when I call him back.

Sorry, one last thing - I'd developed a small leak of clear liquid from just behind the n/s/f wheel - I'd thought that it might have simply been water from teh Air Con system but I now suspect/expect that it's also a problem (it drips of the rear of the inner wheel arch mud guard thingy!!
Any comments on any of the above would be much appreciated.

Sounds like you had fun. My guess would be that you simply picked up all the rubbish from the bottom of the tank and now the fuel filter is clogged and needs changing. The code is probably running lean. The rough running is probably the cause of the transmission light too.

The front suspension setup is quite normal in that they put an adjustable top link on one side only. I would check that it has not come loose or that the wheel bearing has not failed on that side.

As for the leak I would check the pipes going to the heater matrix as you may have a leak there. On our cars they run on the nearside near the bulkhead.

Hope that helps some.

If you have a check engine light and a flashing OD light then you have computer codes, these will 90% of the time point you to your driveability problem.

Just for clarity/language barrier, what is N/S/F? O/S?
also a bag of spanners is what?

N/S/F = Near Side Front
O/S = Off side

bag of spanners = very rough and rattling

okay closer so near side is the drivers side, off side is passenger.
spanners are wrenches?

Near side is the side nearest to the kerb (side of road).
So for both of us near side would be passenger side. However our driver side is your passenger side.

Spanners = wrenches

Clear now. :D

Isn't it funny that English in America originally started in England, but it's so much different! I know that the boot is the trunk, and the bonnet is the front hood. Petrol is gasoline, and the gearbox is the transmission. Other words change in spelling, like realize is realise.

which side is near side if I am no a 1 lane, 1 way street? I dont get it! hahaha
I work in metric all day so I am used to Kilowatts, metric tons, BTUH's and spelling Center "centre" , but some of your terminology is still crazy!!!
Near side? Passenger and Driver is so much easier, I think you should all switch :)
or is it switche?

Cheers Gents/Guys,

I feel a little more reassured about the Engine/Transmission light now (but how come it still runs rough on Gas - that wouldn't pass through the petrol filter?)

See what you mean about the terminology - I'd tried to keep it to a minimum but it's everyday language (informally).

I'll report back on my findings - - The Garage have ordered a new part for the N/S (passenger) - I think that it will mean that both sides will be adjustable.

Wheel bearing would make sense as it's covered 106K

the wheel bearin/hub assembly is a one piece unit I believe on the 2000

First thing to do for the engine running issue is to pull the codes
