I'm looking at getting a NAvigation System. I think I prefer the Audivox system that runs off a DVD. It has a seprate monitor that can display map or splitscreen with grphic arrow showing which way to go. Also does audio " Turn Left Here " etc. The big plus is I can watch movies while waiting for the kids to get out of school ( or on the trail while waiting to do my turn at an obsticle ) The unit is pricey though.

Anyone else have a NAvigation set-up? I would like to here pros & cons of other systems and prices to help me decide which route to go.

Thanks rob

How much money are you planning on spending on it? As far as i know alpine navigation system is one of the best if not the best. Its a DVD based system but if you get one of the multimedia monitors you can also use it to control your music, video sources, security, and the navigation of course. it is they most upgradeable unit i have seen. check it out at Alpine1.com

$$$$$

I looked at the alpine stuff, very impressed. I'm looking at spending less than 2K on the system. I also plan to move it from vehicle to vehicle. I can mount Display unit on the pedastel and then move it from Tow vehicle to the trail vehicle. I would have to have a seperate GPS antenna in both vehicle and quick disconnects on the power and ground for the DVD unit.

The Alpine stuff seemed to be priced around 2.7K.
( I have a connection at Audiovox, though )

Thanks

oh and some prices are
$2000MSRP for the dvd navigation unit
$500 MSRP for the monitor made with navigation controls
$800-$1600 MSRP for all the other monitors
If you talk with the shop tou buy it from you can probably get the navigation system with the navigation monitor(500MSRP) for about $1500 before the install

Why not look intoa Garmin GPS unit. I myself want a GPS-V one day. Get that with the topo map and you should be good to go. WAAS enabled makes it accurate to within 9 feet.

$409 to $500

Features

One of the features I'm really interested in is the mapping portion. On the Audivox system you can enter the address and it will map your route. I have used this and it worked very well, simple to use. I'm sure Alpine works similar. A big plus here in Dallas is the traffic jam option which is supposed to available in June. If traffic's backs up it will alert you and offer to route you via an alternate route. That means no more talk Radio traffice reports while I'm sitting on the highway in the traffic jam they didn't report.

I need to check the Alpine set-up to see if I can get pricing in that range?

Also, checking out Garmin stuff.

Anyone know if the DVD stuff has complete mapping on a single disc or if you have to buy " regions" @ $100 a pop.

I just read through the alpine systems Faq and it said there dvd unit would not run movie dvds. i dont know why it wont but thats what it said. i would almost like to buy a different company because of that. i wouldnt want to have to buy a navigation unit and a dvd player to watch movies thats 2 din just for disc holders. in the dec 2001-jan2002 Mobile Entertainment magazine there is an article on dvd specific navigation systems try to get ahold of a copy of that and take a look at it. This is the website listed on the cover of the mag hope this helped. Major
