i think. its a 93 XLT, 4x4 worked about 2 weeks ago it has been intermittent the solenoid in the back works and the dash switch is replaced and was working fine and since the solenoid works it should right? BUT. no lights on the the dash or the button so im thinking its the shifter motor on the T-fer case... why is it you always need it when it doesn't work? if you guys have any input let me know

Also if anyone is selling that electric motor cheap I'm interested, frees good to ;) however probably wont happen but might as well ask right? ill pay shipping and all that jazz. or a parts trade if i have the part. just let me know. winters coming soon and i have a 80 mile a day commute to school and need to fix it!

thanks
Ryan

It is an easy fix

true is it difficult?

it's easy. The term "rebuild the shift motor" is a misnomer. What your really doing is going after a plastic bushing on the ring drive gear, that's disintegrated. A piece of 1/4 inch fuel line about 3/16ths inch long replaces it.

READ the thread. It'll keep ya outta trouble and save ya bux:p:

thanks guys i read the thread but do i need to drop my transfer case or can i just take it out?

Nah, if you look under the vehicle on the backside of the transfer case, you should see it and should be able to remove it without dropping the case.

can i drive it without the motor on it? or should i park it till its fixed?

You can drive without the motor but a cover to keep out dirt/etc. is a good idea until you replace the motor. If all else fails, I have a freshly rebuilt one you can have for the twelve bucks I paid for it and the motor can be shipped by US mail for about $15 $20.

i actually may want to buy it if your selling that way i can fix the one in it and put it in my EP bin i mean i cant see it being anything else unless the relay in the back can click but not actuate the motor im very intrested though

It is possible to hear the "click" of the relay in the rear transfer case controller and NOT have four wheel drive. That happened to me. One relay was not working! I rebuilt my shift motor with no success restoring the 4WD drive. I went to the JY and bought a second one and rebuilt it. Tested it outside the car and it would work. Installed it and still no joy. I tested the output to the motor at the plug under the car and found no volts to the motor when 4WD selected. Back to the JY for another 4WD drive computer. Installed it in my car and it worked as did my 4WD drive. Suddenly I had 4WD hi and 4WD low.

Then I found that the auto hubs would slip but that is a different story. Check to see if the selector motor has power before investing in a second motor. The original motor on mine is 20+ years old and the only problem was the infamous plastic ring. I pulled both motors apart and checked the brushes (they are DC motors so have two carbon brushes in them) and greased the bearings with hi-temp lithium grease, cleaned the armatures so the brushes would have good contact, and replaced the plastic ring with a piece of Teflon tubing I cut from 3/8" Teflon tubing used to hook up a commercial ice maker.

The Teflon is available at OSH or almost any hardware store for 60 cents a foot. Major problem was I bought 10' of it to get a 3/8" wide piece. The original shift motor and the one I bought at the JY still have more than 50% of the brushes left with only slight wearing on the armatures. They should last at least another 20 years.

Stay in touch and I'll help if I can.

ill try testing with the multi meter and see what i get, i had 4 hi and low like 2 weeks ago and then all of a sudden it wouldn't go. ill keep you posted as to whats what, hopefully i can have it fixed soon.

hey BWTGUY do you still have that rebuilt motor?
the junkyard ones are unreachable and it would cost more to have them pull the motor than to buy your rebuilt one one which is rebuilt haha, please let me know
thanks ryan

Before you invest the money in my/a different motor, have someone sit in the driver's seat, turn on the key (careful that you do not start the engine), press the hi-4 wheel drive and check both the LED at the selector switch and the light on the instrument panel to see if both are lit. If they are, then press the lo-4 wheel drive switch and while the switch is pressed the person under the car must carefully loosen the motor at the transfer case just enough to move the selector case to allow the contacts inside to (1) light the LED and lo range dash lights and (2) cause the drive motor to engage the lo range of the transfer case. Tighten the bolts holding the DC motor to the transfer case and turn off the key. When you are out from under the car, start the engine, select neutral, and while holding the brake pedal HARD, select first 4 wheel drive Hi and then 4 wheel drive low. Select drive on the transmission and move the car about 15 - 20 feet forward which should engage the 4 wheel drive lo. If this works, you should see both the hi and lo LEDs lit as well as the 4 wheel drive low light on the dash lit. You should feel the low gear as the car moves forward.

If this fails, sure I'll sell you the spare motor.

but none of my dash lights work like the button lights dont light up sorry if im repetitive i just dont think i fully understand and my truck is a 5 speed with the M5OD could i still do the test?
