Well it happened this morning ,wife hit a deer and wiped out her 1998 Explorer

Have been looking at new ones anyway but darn just took full coverage off it a few months ago.
Anyways whats the real difference of AWD vs 4X4 on the 2010 Explorer?
Thanks guys

Sorry about the accident. Hope the DW is OK.

I believe that the 4x4 option will have you in RWD in normal mode (no torque going to the front wheels), with the option of part-time (locked) 4WD-Hi, and part-time (locked) 4WD-Lo. You would have dash buttons for all 3 modes.
The AWD option (if it's the same as what's available on Mountaineers) will have you in full-time "4WD-Auto" in normal mode. This has some torque going to all 4 wheels at all times, with limited slip between axles handled thru a viscous coupling. Torque is transferred automatically, as needed, when wheel-slip is detected. You would also have a 4WD-Hi (locked) option, but no low-range. If it's like the Mountaineers, you have no dash buttons. AWD is your normal mode, and you lock the center coupler thru the "settings menu" if you need to get out of a jamb.

If you get off-road a lot, or otherwise need a low-range, get the 4WD. If this will only be a highway cruiser, get the AWD. I believe the cost difference is zero.
