So, I installed my system over the weekend. Starting to look great.....(install wise)...well today/tonight I decided to wire up the whole system...even though I had the HU and the CD changer working....I wanted to make sure the amps work and all that fun junk....

Well, after spending my sweet time making sure all power and ground connections were connected and ready to go....I put the fuse in the 4guage power wire to the back and turned on the car...... well I got power back there for about......5-10 secs and now nothing.....I have since taken the fuse out of the line so they wont power on.....(as a precaution....)

So, the question is.... do you think its power problem, grounding problem, remote power problem??? Any ideas...

I will be taking the HU into work tomorrow and double checking that I hooked the remote power wire to the correct set of wires.....but I think I did.....

Just bugging me now cause it looks SOOOO good...

its not the remote power- most likely its a bad ground or connection somewhere. I wouldn't hesitate to try a new fuse of the proper rating or less and see if it works.

If the fuse on the power wire didn't blow then it's either a fuse on the amp, the amp itself, or a power line melted (the fuse was too large).

I think it is the remote turn on fuse. Let us know what it was.

Ok,

The remote turn on wire does not have a fuse.....should I get one that does?

As of right now I have the ground dist. screwed down to the floor of the truck where the stock sub used to screw down... where should I change that to?

I will double check all connections (pull and rescrew them in).... try proper rating fuses where?

Alec, what do you mean by the fuse was too large?

And last, how do I tell if a power line melted....

Well I ran outside and checked the umm fuses and brought the amps in to work..... problem.... neither of my amps have fuses built in to them....

Looking at both of the amp manuals it says that maybe I am either not getting enough juice from the battery (getting new 200amp alternator...) or maybe the remote turn on isnt giving enough juice to make it realize its on??

what is the remote line connected to?

The fuse may be of too high a capacity, not doing it's job and still putting other components at risk.

The remote line was connected to the "amp turn-on" wire/power wire. (stock harness/HU harness)

I am going to try it on the power antenna wire and see if that works better.

Also, I will bring in the fuse for the power wire and put the number in the post so you can tell me if I need a different fuse....(even though it worked in my nissan).

I have not had access to a multi-meter yet to check for voltage or anything anywhere.... :(

Gonna go out and try seeing if I can get it to power up again.... will post results..... if no power than I will call a friend who is an electrician.... but I dont wanna have to...

Also, will get the fuse number when I bring it back in.

OK, got the fuse in here since the amps still wont power up...... 5AG80A.....thats the fuse I am currently running.

Guess I will be calling my good friend to give me a small helping hand....if he can....

Still taking suggestions....

My guess would be to double check that fuse up by the battery on the power wire. The remote turn on wire doesn't need much power so that should've been fine where it was connected. Sometimes those fuses blow and you cannot tell my just looking at them. Try replacing that fuse up by the battery on the power wire.

Also double check your ground wire, maybe that is why the fuse blew?

Just some thoughts....

If in fact it is the fuse up by the battery that has blown and is causing all my problems..... what size fuse to get....

JL recommends a 50Amp fuse..... but so does my Rockford..... So the real question...if it is a fuse and I run a 500W amp and a 400W amp ....whats the correct size.....is 80A correct?

my calculations say you won't need more than a 63 amp fuse. I think an 80 amp should be fine, but if i had everything available i'd try it with a 50 first (it should work at low volume levels and it will keep you system safer, eventually if you crank it up and it consistently blows then you should run a larger one- but i doubt you'll see that situation)

it is not the remote on wire- my question is are you running an aftermarket hu ( i now see that youare, but is it powering on)? is the fuse blown in the stock fusebox?

you need to test to make sure your getting power to the rear.

also i would be that your amps do have their own internal fuses- almost all do.

Well, after a small amount of detective work.....I found my problem....but now....how to solve it?...

After pondering how to test the power to the back without a multi meter.....I remembered that the JL amp has a signal selection switch.....when its off it uses the remote on wire.....when its on it uses a signal through the RCA cables to turn on....and guess what.... it turns on...

SOOO, the remote power wire is toast I guess....

So then the question is ..... do I get a new wire and try and use the factory harness.....or do I hook it straight to the fuse box.....or is there another way??

Once I replace the wire the system will be working and closed up....so to speak...and pics will be posted....

So someone help me fix the remote on wire and tell me the best way to split the remote on to 2 amps... :)

Just link up the 2 remote wires and take the now single lead to the radio fuse in the interior fuse panel. Take the fuse out, strip the end of the wire, wedge it into one of the sockets, and put the fuse back in.

WOO HOO.........

Well, I finally got the remote wire all figured out.....took me a couple tries.....and a few sparks....

All the door speakers are working great now and the sub hits well too but it came back in the house till I can get the wall put back up and all the wiring cleaned up and installed proper.....

Just a few more days and it will all be done.....I hope

Thanks all for your help.

Kevin

Well, thanks to all your wonderful help from this forum I am closer to having the system done.

The front of the vehicle is 95% done......stupid driver side door... and todays project is to wire the rear doors and get the covers back on them. Also, hoping to get the holes cut in the amp rack for the wires to run behind.... Then to secure it to the X's wall :)

Pretty it up and I am done.....well except for the stupid tweeters....still deciding on them... but heres how it sits so far...

HU - installed
CD changer - Installed in the center console
Front comps - all but tweeters in (X-over's in the glove box)
Rear speakers - installed but wire needs proper running...
Amp rack - 75% complete (holes to cut out and wires to trim)..
Clean Car - never gonna happen.... too lazy
