Just went to start my ranger and heard a loud pop, like a backfire, then continued doing that for the few seconds I had it running and also noticed smoke coming from under the hood. I'm pretty sure it came from the driver's side but not totally 100% positive on that. Last weekend I replaced the fuel filter and spark plugs and has run fine since then, today I cleaned the MAF sensor, after cleaning it, letting it dry then reinstalling it I didn't drive it for a few hours. Not sure what happened but I need this problem fixed as this is my daily driver and need to work in the morning. Thanks in advance for any tips.

Anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong? I would like to get this fixed.

Anyone know what could be wrong? I still need this fixed.

Have you looked under the hood for something that looks burned? Lots of folks here would be happy to help, but so far all we know is you heard a pop and then some smoke came out.

Thats not enough info to form an opinion on.

Any hoses or caps blown off the vacuum tree?

Any indication where the smoke came from? Any loose tools around the battery? Did one of the pins bend when installing the MAF that could have caused a short?

I was able to finally check under the hood, checked the maf sensor and its connector and everything was good, then noticed a push screw was undone. After looking around i checked the spark plug wires. Turns out one of the spark plugs popped out as it was still connected to its wire and it came right out. I checked out the plug and still looks to be in good shape. Can i reuse it or should i replace it with a new one?

Yeah, that would make it run bad!
Sounds like that plug wasn't tight when it was installed, and slowly can loose till it blew out.
Check the threads on the plug, if they look good, I'd just screw it back in and see how it runs.

Truck is up and running better than before, glad I didn't have to replace the plug though, $12/pair. Thanks for all the tips.
