I feel stupid posting this but after taking my 07 v8 xlt to the dealer for an oil change I can't get the oil filter off and it's time to change the oil & filter again. There is not much room to work - Is there some type of wrench that fits over the bottom for this car? I am using the stock motorcraft filter.
Thanks for the help.

There sure are, and of varying designs:

But since you're just removing it, you can even, if you have the room, stab and rotate with a screwdriver (at the bottom, not at the top) just to get it loose. The replacement filter should be just hand tight. Just make sure the old gasket/ring/seal thing is removed cauz sometimes it sticks to the block instead of the filter.

I prefer the last type in Iz's post.

Good luck ...

By the way, how were you trying to remove the filter?

I have a wrench but it is more like a channel locks that locks down. Not much room to move around in there. I like the last one also. i will check around to find it. I assume it connects to a breaker bar or something similiar.
thanks for the help.

Just a regular socket driver (maybe with an extension if you dont have room) -- the important thing is that these things are NOT to be put on with that much torque.

I found it hard to take mine off also for the first oil change since I bought it- i did the old, screw driver through the can trick!
Make sure you punch the whole near the bottom of the filter, all the way through with the screw driver to enable you to turn it!
I tried at first for ages by hand, but it was on too tight!!!!
Be careful and make sure the exhaust is cold before you start, I ran the engine to warm the oil to thin it and forgot the exhaust was hot...............you would think at 42 I would know better eh?

Use your teeth as a last resort.. :)

Seriously use the last one the member posted about above as that is a Awesome style to remove many Filters on Many vehicles, just make sure to wipe any grease/oil off of the filter before trying to remove it.

Just to throw something else at you.....
I use the first type shown. Since I used to change filters on my kids cars also I needed something for different size & placement filters and found the first, pliers type, fit most filters & applications.

Yes, but nowadays with these Compac cars it is hard to even move one inch inder many vehicles. I have the first one and second type shown in here, but i like the third one too.

Dont feel dumb! Some of them filters are a pain in the arse to get out, i've mangled a few to the point where theres more flow out the sides of the filter than through the screw on end XP Guess someone really torqued her on there or didnt oil the gasket

As mentioned before, the screwdriver trick works pritty good if you can get such a "tool" in the space you have to work with, I've only used the second filter wrench in IZ's post and strap wrenchs, but I suppose if you couldnt get the bottom one to work and you had the time you could prolly poke some holes in the bottom of the filter and use a 4x4 hub socket to turn it out....er, just thinkin out loud :D

I use one like the bottom one, with a small extension and a socket wrench, works quick. I've got the first two in the garage for other cars but have a heck of a time using them on my Ex.

I've also had to use the dreaded screwdriver trick, but I use the "socket" type now. But I'm sure that yours is jammed in there pretty good, and most likely you wouldn't have room for a screwdriver.

If you get the socket type, wiggle it on there good before trying to loosen it- that one will get it off there.

There is a new type of filter socket that grips the filter base with a 3-leg camming action. There are several manufacturers, and one will run you $7 to $13 retail. I consider this a third-best solution after the strap-wrench and cup-type sockets mentioned above, but if all else fails, try it.

I just used one from Autozone ($7) to get a stubborn filter loose on my '99 Explorer. The advantage is you can get a good grip on the filter base and have the socket wrench for leverage in tight engine spaces.

The disadvantage, if the filter is really tight, is that the gripping rotation will tend to crumple the filter body somewhat. I first drained the filter by punching a hole in the bottom, then used the wrench to loosen the filter. Looking at the filter after removal showed three indentations of about 3/8 inch each into the filter body -- but it worked.

I used a 4lb sledge hammer take a filter off of my old chevy motor on the ground .... works great .... broke the threaded adapter off with it.. :)

Seriously though i like that three leg style one now and i must look for one in my area.

anger management on chevy^^lol :)

That was one tuff filter to remove and it helped my frustrations of that motor seizing up on me in the snow ..... :)

Oh i was ahead of you on that one i used a cutting torch to cut truck into a trailer.... :)

Then i cut up the cab and the rest of that POS, lights and all.... :)

The motor was pulled and laid on the ground before all of that, the tranny was demolished by sledge hammer ... Chevy Destruction always makes my blood run cold, cold chevy killer me is.. :)

The shame is that not much was lost, it wasn't worth anything. I felt a loss when I wrecked my first car, because it was so nice.
