1998 ford explorer sport AWD (or auto 4x4).
ok to start, it was whining, the whining got louder, then it made a clunking sound. had it towed home, and with help i discovered only the right rear wheel clunks, like its not wanting to turn.
also before it started clunking, the abs light came on, and when i start from a start, the speedometer doesnt read untill the abs light comes on.

anyone have any ideas? my dad thinks its the u-joints, but would that cause the right rear wheel to act like that?

thanks,
Kevin

could be u joints but i would check the bearings and brakes also.

ok so i figured out what it was. looks like the left side carrier bearing went out. so now just to figure out how to pay for a rebuild.

if i go to the junkyard to get a rearend, would there be an issue with putting a limited slip rear in where i have the open?

thanks
Kevin

if you replace the whole axle assy, no.
and that would be the best and easiest bet.

assuming you can find an axle with the correct gears and L/S

well does anyone have a tools list for pulling a rear end? that way im not carrying the whole tool box with me into the junkyard

thanks
kevin
