Please reply to this post i realy need help ??

I have a 1996 manual explorer with some real problems I can not drive it in auto and high it will not drive in 1,2,3,4,5, or r, you can put it into gear and let the cluch out it will not go anywhere ,does anybody know why ? it will only drive in 4x4 low , so i dont think its the cluch or the gearbox .

the problem started three days ago i was on the highway and i come to brake and it sounded like it sliped out of gear with a grineing sound and the when you put you foot on the gas again the sound stoped and it went back into gear and drove. over the past three days the problem is realy bad noe as it wil not drive .

Does anybody no of any problems like this what could it be transfer case is broken or the transfer motor .

Please let me know ,please reply to this post any ideas or info

many thanks for reading this

Sounds like the transfer case is shot. The transmission is full of fluid?

The fact that it only moves in 4 low means about a 90% chance its the transfer case.

Thanks for getting back to me

Listen what do you mean the the transmission is full of fluid could there be to much fluid in there.

can you tell me a bit more as you know about cars and what i need to do because a think the transfer case cost a lot of money i think ?

Could it be the motor on the transfer case not working

please reply back many thanks for takeing the time

cheers

Trying to clarify what you are saying...

- You have a 5spd manual Explorer with 4x4

- Your 4x4 switch says Auto / 4Hi / 4Low

- Truck will not move in any gear or 4x4 selection except for 4Low.

Check the fluid level in the transfer case. My guess is the shift fork(?) in the
t/f case is shot.

In a '96, the switch should be 2WD/4Auto/4Lo.
