2004 Explorer XLT
Ok I just cleaned out the PCV valve on myh 2004 Explorer XLT 4.0L the other day. All I had was throttle body cleaner so I used that thinking it would be fine. It took me a week to find the valve. When I finally found it I was having trouble getting the valve off so I was prying and wiggling it with pliers. I finally figured out how to get it out, sprayed it out good with the throttle body cleaner blew threw it and all that and put it back in. I then started it and it seemed fine. A few hours later my wife went to go somewhere and the neginge was rattling VERY loudly. I can get a new valve tommorrow but not til I get off of work but my wife needs the car to drop kids off at school. The only I can think is that the valve is not airtight anymore from prying on it. I tried to wrap electrical tape around it and screw it back in. It seems pretty tight but still doing the same thing. Any ideas?

I can't imagine that the PCV can make a rattle.

Well I figured it out I guess it was just a coincidence. I had a mechanic I know look at it and apparently one of the timing chains snapped. The right valve cover got broken too. Great. If it isn't one thing it's another. I thought it was going to be a simple fix but now it's a major repair. Luckily I know a few great mechanics who can do it for me for cheap.

just put in a used engine, these motors need special tools to set timing, and parts to repair an over head cam are expensive, plus you will have the motor already out, so I would not take any chances with the old engine or the repair, and have to take out the engine for the second time, put in a running engine and leave the headach to the side.

Well I work at a shop. I can get parts for $600 and I have a guy who is going to do it for $200 with my help. Cheapest reman. engine is $1700 that I coulod find and I have been reading up on those and everybody is saying that just because they say it has been rebuilt does not mean that they did everything that they were supposed to. So if I would go that route I would buy new and cheapest I found there was $2500. So even on a rebuilt engine I'm at about half the price to just fix it. And I know that there could be all kinds of other problems so I am going to find out if the valves are bent or whatever else before I put in any of the parts. But right now I'm screwed because I don't even know how I am going to come up with the $800. Going to try to get a credit card but idk.

if you put 800 in to this engine what is going to fail down the road, seals, bearing, leaks, not worth it.

I bought a 2010 4.0 sohc engine off ebay with 2000 miles out of a ranger, for 1000 bucks 200 shipping.

I just ripped apart my old engine I thought I would rebuild it, I would never rebuild this engine. there are so many moving parts. it's not worth fixing, you can get a used engine out of a ranger or mustang also.

this is my 2nd engine swap I did one in my 97 and 03 explorer, these 4.0 engines are headachs with those chains
